Bought myself a Cuisinart

by Jon Peterson » Mon Jan 04, 2010 2:42 pm

Liz and I have bought ourselves a Cuisinart stand mixer and a Cuisinart hand mixer. I was going for a Kitchen-Aide but they had a deal on Cuisinart at Bed, Bath and Beyond and with those 20% off coupons I could's resist. I feel like Cuisinart is a step up from Kitchen Aide - am I right?
Really stupid instructional DVD came with it but I do get a free food processor (when I fill out the paperwork). Can't wait to make something.
Our old one was an Oster Kitchen Center that had at least 30 years on it and the speed control had a mind of its own!

Cuisinart and KA are both good brands, and which is better may depend on the specific appliance. I have an ancient Cuisinart Food Processor that I'll swear is immortal, but I'm equally convinced that my KA stand mixer will outlast the food processor and every other appliance in my kitchen. :) I'm sure you'll be very happy--especially with that free FP!

Cuisinart is definitely not a step up from KitchenAid.

A Cuisinart story, that only I find interesting.

About a year ago NJ reported that our Cuisinart Food Processor (vintage 1978) had stopped working and was emitting that foul burnt electrical smell which is a sure sign of a fatal appliance coronary. As master repairman in our house, I did indeed confirm that it was dead and remarked how wonderful it was that it lasted 30 years or so. So NJ, who never discards anything, puts the appliance back on the shelf. The next day, I read the warranty (Yup, still have the original document. Did I mention NJ never throws anything away?)and darned if the thing didn't come with a lifetime warranty.

So the next day, after carefully rehearsing my demand for a new processor, I call the tele# on the warranty and amazingly the number still works. A guy, who sounded very pompous, answered and I told him our tale. He responded in an equally pompous and measured tone: "Sir, that just is not possible". I'm ready to kick his ass for insinuating I'm full of crap, but he quickly and pompously asks me to to plug in the machine. All the while, I'm thinking I show this pompous ass what is, or isn't, possible.

I plug it in and IT WORKED and continues to work fine to this day. I guess there is some sort of automatic shut off that prevents the unit from fatally overheating. Once the unit cools down, it apparently resets itself.

My Craftsman radial arm saw (vintage 1975) has that feature also. I discovered it when a board I was cutting jammed and stopped the blade from turning.

I have one about four years older with a cast-iron piece that holds the saw assembly instead of stamped metal pieces bolted together after Sears started cheapifying it.

Cuisinart Food Processor... you're right! It just keeps chuggin' along. Mine is 25 years old and I've bought new blades and a new container but the processor unit seems to be built like a Mack truck! :D

Here's the story if anyone is interested. Personally, I've always used Robot-Coupes in restaurants and in my school.

We have a big Robot Coupe we use in the lab. It's a monster - the guys in "Fargo" wouldn't have needed that wood chipper if they'd had one of those.

Interesting story on the Cuisinart people. They did all right for themselves. $60 million was real money in 1988!

Oh man, my 1987 Cuisinart had that burnt electrical smell two months ago and I just threw it out and bought a new one. Darn!!

My Kitchen Aid mixer will outlast me.
Best Regards

I am. I still have the disassembled pieces of my beloved Kitchenaid mixer that jammed and burned out the motor. Maybe someday, I'll get it repaired. At the time, no place could repair it; that's changed since, but I went out and bought a new one.

We recently received the shipment of a Cuisinart Toaster Convection Oven. We got it from Amazon for $155 with free shipping. It could be had for less elsewhere, but seemingly indefinately out of stock. Anyhoo, we like it very much. The main attraction in addition to on-line reviews was the fact that it is digital.

Our previous toaster/oven had manual controls that could in some cases go in both directions, others to the right only, and others to the left only. This led to too much confusion by various operators, leaving the $99 machine on life support after two years.

Carl,

If yours is the Cuisinart all stainless steel TOB 195; that is the same one I received for Christmas. So far I love it.

Sounds like the same one, or something very close. Ours is stainless steel in the TOB 195 series. Glad you like it.
