Kitchen Remodel Week 47

by Jenise » Tue Dec 15, 2009 6:49 pm

Last week I called my cabinet guy and unloaded on him. After 46 weeks of being so easy to get along with, I'd had it. And I said so. "FINISH MY KITCHEN," I commanded. The next morning his wife came by to offer me the two selections of handles that we'd specified to choose from, and he had them overnighted to him. The cabinets were otherwise complete, but I found it totally impractical to move back into the kitchen without handles on the cabinet doors and drawers. Also, the top of the pantry cabinet had to get lifted up and into place now that the appliance bar granite was in so that we could assemble and install the rest of the racking for that separate room.

Yesterday all that got done. And not related but just good news, today the electrician is here putting up the last two pendants, and the granite guy is also here installing the 10 foot by 8 inch chiseled slab that is the raised bar that separates my prep counter from the eating counter. He's also going to seal the counter and grout the granite slabs at the wall joints, a task he strangely didn't think was his job (if not him, then who???)

There's still a lot of first floor work to go, and there's backsplash tile yet to install, but after today I really will have a real live working kitchen again. Pictures will follow shortly.

I keep thinking about remodeling the kitchen in our 40+ year old home. Then I read one of your posts & I again decide against it.

I'm glad it is nearing the end of your ordeal, but whoa...

No go ahead, this is the perfect time: I've already sucked all the bad luck out of the kitchen remodel universe. Your project should go swimmingly well!

Carrie,

Well, I haven't unpacked yet. :)

And then I'm working on the neighborhood Christmas dinner, which has consumed me all week and will do so until it's all done on Saturday night. I'll be able to unpack just enough to get to the things needed for that. I do, however, have big plans for a duck terrine which I promised myself would be my celebration dish. Might be a few weeks before I can get to it, though.

While I can't imagine surviving a 47 week remodel myself, we have friends that are well past year two of their remodel adventure! Their kitchen was more or less functional after 18 months but...

Two years? Ugh, that would kill me. Or actually, my cats would kill me--they suffered a ten month long incarceration in the master bedroom, and weren't happy about it. I hope your friends' ordeal ends soon.
