Choco Vine

by Karen/NoCA » Fri Dec 11, 2009 3:38 pm

I was given a bottle of this over Thanksgiving.....a dessert wine made in Holland. A blend of find Dutch chocolate and Cabernet. It is wonderful. I can't find it anywhere. The CA distributor no longer carries it. I have a call into Liquor Barn to see if they can get me some. Anyone have any other suggestions?

Wine-Searcher says the only shop close to you that still has it is the WA State Liquor Control Board.

Other than that, a bunch of East Coast places (NY, NJ, DC) and Malloy's in IL.

We have this in our grocery store. I was wondering if it was any good. Thanks for posting. I may just have to pick up a bottle.

I've never heard of this wine or seen it here. It's also not listed as a product on the DeKuyper Dutch website (they're the folks who make it). Makes me think that it is made exclusively for the US market? Interesting. cheers, Bonnie

At what temperature did you serve it? I'm thinking chilled.

Yes, we drank it chilled, but just over ice...I then like to chew the ice after it has melted a little and absorbed some of that lovely wine.

Only if you live in a state that allows wine shipment, Drew, which I do not. :(

That's the darned truth, at least regarding wine and booze.
Did you know that liquor stores (the only place allowed to sell wine except the wineries themselves) have to close at 9:00 PM? And you can't buy an automobile on Sundays, either. D*mned blue laws....

One reason we moved from Pennsylvania. I know all about blue laws (I remember no-Sunday sales and when electronics couldn't be discounted and had to be sold at MSRP) and state stores (which are closed on every holiday and whenever you need booze).

We have similar laws here. A car dealership cannot sell cars on a Sunday.

Years ago, I was in the market for a new car and went to a dealership on a Sunday just to take a look around and get an idea of what prices would be. The next day, I got a call from a saleswoman at the dealership saying, "Thanks for stopping by, if you like that model we can work out a lower price and you can trade your car (she mentioned the make and model!) in for X number of dollars". When I asked her how she knew which car I was looking at on the lot and what kind of car I drove, she said, "We keep an eye on people who come in on Sundays".

After some interrogation, she admitted that they have an employee that sits in the upstairs office with binoculars on Sundays and notes the license plates of cars that come in and what the people look at in the lot. A quick check of their license plates through the DMV reveals the address and phone number of the potential buyer and that is when the saleswoman swoops in and calls the potential customer first thing Monday morning.

And they wonder why they have a bad reputation.

This was delicious. We served it at refrigerator temp and loved it. It was smooth, rich and chocolatey, with a definite kick - it is 14%. It is great as an after dinner drink. I highly recommend it. :D

As soon as one of the local stores gets a new supply, I'm definitely gonna try it.

I have been searching for a somewhat local place to get this wine - but I'm in Greenville, SC and they don't distribute to SC anymore. (it's AMAZING by the way!) I go through NC pretty frequently and was wondering if you could tell me which store you found it? Thanks!

Hi Karen and welcome,

Choco Vine was a surprisingly good find. Harris Teeter still has it at about $12-$13 (up from $10 at Christmas). Look for it with the dessert wines. Total Wine had it around the holidays for $9, but I don't know if they still have it.

I'm glad that you enjoyed it Linda. I love it and just bought a case. Our son works for Southern Wine and Spirits in Sacramento, CA and they are now the distributor for it, (maybe just CA, however) not sure how that all works. I had to order it through the Liquor Barn here. They were able to get it within 2 days. It will make great hostess gifts..something different!
