Dungeness Crab

by Karen/NoCA » Fri Dec 04, 2009 7:58 pm

They're here and they are huge. I don't think I have ever seen them so large, and at $3.99 a pound. So, I have the french bread ready for the broiler and my salad made....Yum! :P

Wow, that's cheap! Crab is on the schedule for next weekend, with my brother.

We just finished picking and eating, great taste. fresh, white (a good sign) and will go back for more soon. We grew up on the coast and know good crab... ( Dungeness, at least) this was excellent. It seems to be a good year, thankfully, since the salmon season was so poor.

Wow, and how cheap. These are California-coastal, I take it? Interesting to think/realize, if this is the case, that your season is so late where ours came and went months ago.

Yep, the season opened a couple of days before Thanksgiving and it usually runs into March or maybe April.

Our season is open in months with "R"...I have been told. The fish place we buy from gets his crab from Eureka and Bodega Bay. They drive down the night before and bring them back early the next morning, then cook them in huge pots. While waiting in line to get crab, it is usually very cold and if the wind shifts, that smelly steam from the crab can be rather awful. It is all part of the local downtown color.

Just came home with four live ones for tonight's supper. I read somewhere that this was only going to be an "average" year for crab, but prices are good and the crabs look healthy.

We heard up here that the crab were huge and plentiful. Sometimes I wonder about the owner where we buy our crab. He seems to tell stories. When I bought the crab, I did see many very large crab, but learned later that he was the one who fed the info. to the news media about the over-sized crab. He also seems to spike up the price just before Christmas Eve. He has been known to sell "picked" crab as fresh and just-picked. I can tell the difference, because once picked crab is frozen and thawed, I can see a slight pink cast to the meat, and of course the texture is compromised.

A lot of my neighbors pick and freeze their crab, Karen, but I don't like it. It always tastes different, and of course the texture you mention--fresh or nothing for me.

Yep - fresh or nothing! And I'm terrified of the time when the overfished crab will join the overfished salmon and late lamented abalone.
Remember when an abalone steak would cover a dinner plate?

Well, this was the best of meals and the worst of meals. I went with a John Ash preparation that involved ginger, shallots, soy sauce, and a few other items. My daughter didn't eat much of the crab at all. I had taken her with me to get them and she named them on the way home, which is never a good thing. I think she liked it but couldn't really get past the idea of eating Flippy, Cancer, etc. My wife liked it well enough but she's never really enthusiastic about meals that don't involve beef or pork.

I loved it, though. Well after they had both left the table I was still there, cracking claws and pulling out some of the sweetest crab I've ever had. (Really, I think this was the best ever.) I just got up from the table and changed my shirt before posting this. The table still looks like a little crab suicide bomber detonated itself in the middle of it. There's a lot to do tonight yet. It's the eve of St. Nicholas Day, so we have to get the stockings out and put them up, not to mention cleaning up the crab mess. Right now, though, I feel very good.

Mike, did you get your crab from Pacific Seafood? My dil is the Director of Project RIDE in Sacramento and she puts on a huge crab feed every January, in the huge barn, as a fund raiser for that group. The crab, and shrimp that are served there is the best I have every eaten.

Karen -

We got ours from SF Market, down on 65th and Stockton.

I do like the benefit crab feeds they have here. There's one put on by an Asian sports foundation that I really enjoy. When is the Project Ride benefit?

I haven't drooled this hard over a thread topic in a long time. Fortunately, we'll be in the Bay Area in 2 weeks so that's one itch that'll get scratched. :D
