I'm with you there! I've not actually eaten them but I've seen the things. Eeewwww gross. Hubby loves 'em, though.

However, for those who DO like them, here is a recipe for boiled peanuts and a story to go with it.

Guess you had to grow up there. :D

And good article/link, by the way. Not least because the author clearly understood the superiority of Georgians to Alabamians, a sentiment clearly recognized by most.

Though I haven't had boiled peanuts in quite a while---you don't see them too often in the western US---I had them quite often when I was growing up, and ate my fair share of them.

As the author noted, they are best when fresh, either from the roadside stands or made yourself. The key is fresh.

When you're poor, and any snacks you have come from what's around you, and when peanuts are an incredibly good ready source of protein in your diet, and when green peanuts are better and more easily consumed when they are prepared, boiled peanuts are kind of natural (and much easier to make than roasted peanuts).

I will agree that they are much, much better when steaming and hot, yes. Cold boiled peanuts aren't nearly as good. But you could say that about a lot of foods, couldn't you?

I'm with you two, Jenise and Linda. And, have you ever looked inside the crock pots they make them in? Uggh. That would be enough to turn you off peanuts of any preparation for good.
I'm trying to put my finger on what boiled peanuts remind me of...something kind of waxy--maybe a canned green bean. I dunno. Ugh.
Hello. My name is Carrie, and I...I....still like oaked Chardonnay. (Please don't judge.)

I thought they tasted like swamp water with a can of tomatoes and a handful of dirt thrown in. Very muddied. Didn't love the texture either. I guess they can be crunchier than those I had, but as someone who's such a fan of roasted peanuts in the shell, these made me wonder "Why?".

I used to buy peanuts from Georgia that came in burlap sacks. I had to roast them. They were huge and it took me a bit to learn how to roast them, but when I nailed it, they were yummy. I salted some and put chili pepper on some with the salt. We ordered them for years. My dad found out about them and got us started. He used to sit on his patio and feed peanuts to the blue jays. He actually had a couple of them trained. One used to catch the peanuts in mid-air, and one actually landed on his knee and took peanuts from his hand.

The best boiled peanuts are green and fresh from the field. Not nearly as good, and the flavor is different, if dried ones are boiled. In late summer we had a stockpot full several times a week, until our garden was picked bare. Dad even canned them in half-gallon Mason jars for consumption out of season. I love, love, love 'em! :D

Prior to the Olympic games in Atlanta some years ago, I made an extensive tour of the state. Found some marvelous places, met some lovely people, ate some truly excellent food (from the most sophisticated to the dedicatedly country-style) and even managed to forget my allergy to soft-shell crabs (good doctor - one injection and all was well)

And indeed, at nearly every country place I stopped, was feted with boiled peanuts. Let's put my reaction this way - reminded me of something between boiled cardboard and the anti-stink inner soles that I put in my shoes. Not my cup of peanuts. And I do adore roasted peanuts from their shells.

A friend of my parents tried them when they were vacationing together somewhere. Her description? "Tastes like a blister." A mental image I'll never forget.

Great pregame fodder and what's best about peanunts is that there's no need to discard the shells--they will definitly add to your fiber intake! Roasting or boiling your own yields flavor you can't get from stadium vendors

Actively dislike them. Why, after eating roasted peanuts would one even consider them? (Always have them around. Give them to the birds, too).

But, no peanuts for me at all until after Monday.

Dear Jenise,

Prepare yourself a stiff drink, hold onto some heavy furniture and be very broard minded,

T.A.P.P.I is, are you ready.?.........The Technical association of the pulp and paper industry.

Its held in Atlanta every two years.

The free sessions were always the best. Its where I learned to say howyaaaaaaall, and to get to know some real Americans ,very nice and really generous people.

God did bless America from what I saw and experienced there.
