Transferring recipes from print to digital?

by Greg H » Tue Oct 13, 2009 10:27 am

For those of you who still purchase or otherwise accumulate hard copy recipes, have you found an efficient way to create digital versions without having to retype the recipe? I am thinking about purchasing one of the hand held scanners, and wondered if anyone has one they like or if you have found an alternative solution.

My Epson All-In-One has a flatbed scanner. It came with OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software. I've used it to transfer recipes from cookbooks to MSWord. One time, while visiting my sister in Maine, I used my digital camera with the close-up option to photograph two pages of a cookbook that contained a Lobster Bisque recipe. I then emailed them to myself and when I got home, I was able to use the OCR software to convert it to MSWord. Here is a link to the recipe: http://www.wineloverspage.com/forum/village/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=17967
Chico - Hey! This Bottle is empty!
Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.

Thanks, Howie. Glad to hear this works. I will look into scanners a little more.

I've been going through my back issues of Bon Appétit. If it's from there (or Gourmet), I look it up on www.epicurious.com and cut and paste it.
