Bringing Home the Bees

by Karen/NoCA » Fri Oct 09, 2009 7:25 pm

I've been doing some research on attracting bees to our yard. We already have yellow finches who love our feeders and a bubbling fountain. Squirrels love it here too, so why not bees. Today, my bee mansion came and I am very anxious to get it up and working. This is a Mason Bee house. They are high pollinators, very docile, and a beautiful metallic green. We have a good location near my garden which will also provide them with the mud they need.
The builder of the nests lives in the Pacific Northwest, somewhere near Seattle and he has been very helpful. I can't wait to begin the project. Does anyone else have bee houses?

I have honey bees that just decided to nest under my roof. This is the second time. Three years ago they were under the eves on the other side of the house. I had to gut a bedroom ceiling to get rid of them. They had honeycombs that filled an area 2 feet wide (spanning 3 rafters) and 4 feet long.
