"Rules to Eat By"

by Mike Filigenzi » Thu Oct 08, 2009 9:24 am

The ubiquitous Michael Pollan has an article in the NY Times magazine profiling some rules to eat by. He gathered these by requesting them from readers of one of the Times's blogs. I found them to be fun and entertaining. I thought folks here might have some of their own. Do you?

Thanks for the link, Mike. I don't really have too many rules to eat by. Except for maybe, "never trust a blonde sushi chef".

They are entertaining. Thanks, Mike, for posting. My favorite is still Miss Piggy's...

Don't eat more than you can lift.

I never break this rule.

Not a rule I have adopted personally (or not yet, anyway) but - the cafe at the State Library in Adelaide has a selection of quotations about food from various novels and plays. In one, an old lady says, "Life is uncertain. I always eat dessert first."

Even Shadow the Wondermutt followed that last rule. He always saved the best for first.

Ach, you guys are all optimists in thinking of "rules to eat by". We curmudgeons prefer lists of"rules not to eat by"

Don't expect a fine dinner at any place that serves breakfast.

Mr. Gavin, or is it Ms.?

You create a rule for something many of us have observed but never actually put into words. Another one along the same lines (especially for travelling abroad): If you can't see water, don't order the fish.

Indeed. When wandering in a new location trying to find someplace decent to eat it is often a matter of excluding places for various reasons and continuing until something is found without too much to make me suspicious.

Oooohhh... that's a good one!

Maybe its the reason many hotels serve breakfast in a different room from their main restaurant.

Corollary to what Peter said: Don't eat in hotel restaurants unless you are damned sure of the quality prior to dining there.

I never eat breakfast in a hotel unless there is no other restaurant available. 99% of hotels charge too much. We were just in New York and the hotel we were staying at charged $32.00 for their continental breakfast, which IMHO is absurd. :( It was a good hotel but not at the Ritz Carlton or Four Seasons level.
