More evidence of the decline of civilization...

by Hoke » Tue Oct 06, 2009 1:40 pm

It was announced that the Louvre is opening a new food operation.

Descend through the I.M. Pei Pyramids into the sanctum of classic French and world art.

Dine at McDonald's, another classic and iconic work of art.

The authorities expect the new eatery to be a great hit, and a wonderful profit generator.

I expect they are correct.

Yes I saw a story on this in the paper today. IIRC it said there were 1,173 McDonalds outlets in France. Sacre Bleu!

Still at least this fits with my general attitude to restaurants/tourist sites... be very wary indeed of any restaurant in an obvious touristy location.

Sound advice, Ian.

Always exceptions, of course...don't know how it's faring now, but there was a time when the Jules Verne had surprisingly good scores for a tourist destination restaurant. And I was quite impressed when I went; but as I said, that was wayback. High prices went along with it, alas.

The restaurants at both the top and the bottom of the now defunct World Trade Center were capable of churning out some excellent meals.

Hoke
Indeed the most frequent exceptions are when a restaurant recognises it's location (and high rent) and aims to produce something worthy of the location at whatever the price has to be. It might be 50% more expensive than a comparable restauarant, but done well it earns it's place to sit alongside it's more famous neighbour (and if they're really on their game, can be as memorable).

Ah, but in every location, there's usually a dirty, ramshackle alley .... Oh hang on  that IS Paris

postscript: I really didn't mean that. Comic effect and all that

I recall when a cardiologist opened a Mickey D's franchise in a Minneapolis hospital. Good for business, I guess.

FWIW, if you want to see something really scary, visit the websites of fast food chains, click on their menus and read their nutritional facts. It'll shiver your timbers.

Mc Donalds is going to be the US representative in the international food court, Hoke.

Shouldn't really be surprised. According to their annual report, France has become McDonald's biggest market in the world outside of the US. 30 new outlets last year in France, 450 million customers – up 11 per cent on the previous year.

I do think there is something special about the fries in the French McDonalds I've eaten at.

There was a similar outcry over placing a Starbucks near the entrance last year. But the Louvre was a cheap date -- Starbucks put up a display of brochures for the museum and all was well. :)
