Kitchen Remodel Report #13

by Jenise » Thu Oct 01, 2009 2:40 pm

As we start Month #10 of living in our bedroom, it seems a good time for an update. Although, actually, there's not much to report except that, as usual, nothing's gone according to plan. Where we last left off, the cabinets had just been installed in the kitchen area. Days later, Doug the appliance installer arrived to place the dishwasher (our 4-year old Bosch) and new warming drawer and refrigerator in place.

He was only able to install the warming drawer.

And that only, thank god, because Doug knew how to install an outlet and there was actually an empty space in a cabinet for him to do that. The electrician had run wire for it but the unit itself doesn't hard-wire, it needs an outlet. Nevermind that the drawer itself was here onsite all this time to physically inspect AND I'd pulled all the installation specs for every appliance and attached those to the drawings.

The dishwasher was uninstallable because our contractors had, during demolition, just cut the drain hose. From what I understand, in many/most dishwashers (or at least, any of those my contractor has ever seen) that's a generic aftermarket part that would typically be replaced in a new installation. But not the Bosch. Instead it's a piece that's installed inside the machine and it required taking apart the machine and installing a brand new factory hose from the connector point within the machine itself.

The refrigerator was uninstallable because when Doug unwrapped it, he found what we couldn't see through the industrial cellophane and cardboard edge trim: the front vent piece for the top that hides the compressors from view was bent back about an inch. It could not be bent back into place but requires full replacement of the steel parts that hold sides and top together. ( For any of you who ever consider building or remodelling, let this be a lesson to you: do not unwrap any of your appliances. Let the installer do it because that proves that any damage occurred prior to delivery. On this fridge, and also on the Viking stove, which when it was unwrapped was found to have no feet packed in the box, this alone saved both my warranties and additional expense. Also, hire your appliance seller or someone they reccomend for installation. When that guy phones them up and says X is wrong and you have to replace it, they believe him. They might not believe you or someone they don't know.) Anyway, those parts have to come from the factory and were, as of last week, about four weeks out.

One of these days we're going to get a break. I'm sure of it. Yeah. Uh huh.

You're getting there, Jenise - at least you now have a place to unwrap a damaged fridge!

When we bought our refrigerator a year or two ago, it arrived with a very evident dent in the cardboard. I photographed that, then took off the cardboard and found a pretty decent corresponding dent in the side of the fridge. We called the company (Liebherr) and they basically gave us a choice of a minor refund or a new unit. We chose the latter as, with the way ours is installed, you couldn't hide the dent. The new one came, we boxed up the old one, and away it went.

Jenise,
Perhaps what is worse is that the feeling of what's next ? and a dread of waiting for something else bad to happen will outlast - at least for awhile -the completion of your project.
I just looked back at your last report which I missed - it is already spectacular. Wonderfully organized and elegantly sleek.

Glad your situation got resolved to your satisfaction. Mine will too eventually, I'm just temporarily disheartened by the way--once again--so little seems to go right the first time.

You're right about the dread. My mind has already projected what those things could be--things I couldn't speak to let alone put in print. I'm really ready for the good luck part to start.

Well, you have a standing dinner invitation to the east coast...Month 10? Maybe you just want to move in here for a while. Move back when said kitchen is done.

Barb, if I could get on a plane in the next two hours, I would! I *so* don't want to be here today.

But guess what? Big news: I HAVE A REFRIGERATOR. The parts came in early so it got installed Tuesday and yesterday I started loading it. Very important step and more than just because it's so thrilling to not have to go to the garage for stuff, but now that it's no longer in the garage I can have movers in to move the grand piano and the dining room table to the garage so that my cabinet guy can paint the built-in buffet that was original to the house, and which we're keeping. All of that's happening today.

Sounds like a great day to be home Jenise.
I had bad days too when we went through our remodels. Only mine took a few years, because I have a husband who didn't think the house needed anything. Even when we remodeled the kitchen he refused to do the laundry room which is just off the kitchen. So I had a beautiful new kitchen with white cabinets, and the laundry room still had ugly, old brown cabinets with a dark linoleum floor. If was only after many comments from guests and family, that he finally saw the light. My designer helped in so many ways when I tired of the battles, she stepped in and told him how it would be best "to do it this way". Of course, when it was all done, he finally agreed that it looked great. But guess what? He did put the brakes on with the bathroom cabinets. So they are still the old, ugly brown! I finally gave up. When he did suggest we get it done...I said "forget it"....by that time I did not care anymore.

So enjoy all your changes, it will soon be done, and on that night you and Bob can sit and drink wine and soak in the beauty.

Karen, I'd have killed him. :) I had to put it to Bob that we do everything or we do nothing, because the last thing we wanted was a 2009 kitchen with a 1983 everything-else. This house is too open to get away with that. Think you'll end up doing those bathrooms yet?

Cool! Sounds like a few of the dominos are starting to fall.
