My friend Roxie's fruit fly trap

So Roxie and I and a bunch of other women were at a local wine bar on Monday night (once a month, we mob the place) and it was absolutely overrun with fruit flies. These were as thick as I've seen anywhere, ever--you could not leave your glass uncovered between sips. I mentioned the vinegar trick to the proprietor, so she filled about ten wine glasses with the requisite cider vinegar and drops of dish detergent off to one side, and by the time we left there were what appeared to be thousands of candidates swarming the glasses, ready to dive to their deaths.

I do not know if Roxie was previously aware of the vinegar trick or not, but I am certain that this shared experience is what prompted Roxie to send me the following picture this morning of her own effort to trap the little bastards.

SO where does the dish detergent go? IN the vinegar or "to the side" meaning a separate container?

Just a drop IN the vinegar. Breaks the surface tension so they sink/drown rapidly.

Boy was the vinegar trick handy last night: had some friends over for dinner (no, the house isn't ready for entertaining yet, but on Friday night at our neighborhood wine tasting I lost my head and invited everyone at our table for ten to dinner--so it was a picnic table on bare concrete with plastic cutlery kind of a dinner) and glasses of vinegar on the table kept the fruit flies occupied and out of our wine glasses.
