New to the world of winter gardening.

We've had to remove giant oaks from our property the past few years, which caused nearby oaks to get sun scald and become dangerous...so they were removed also. We've taken a class, visited other successful gardens and have now built shade structures over the two raised beds we are using for this project. Since they are cool weather crops and we are still hot, the structures are necessary until the end of October. Here is our broccoli and Brussels sprout bed. Onion sets will arrive in the nursery soon and will be planted in this same bed. So far, so good....I go out every morning to see if any pests have found us.

I recommend planting several members of the onion family, such as leeks, garlic, shallots, onions, scallions, chives, etc. And for fun, plant some walking onions.

I already have regular chives and garlic chives. The walking onions sound great, I have to try those. I will also do the shallots and green onions, leeks are in the nursery now too. Thanks for the ideas.
