Sweet Potato vine is taking over

by Karen/NoCA » Wed Sep 09, 2009 1:24 pm

We planted this for fun, but it has taken over one entire corner of the raised bed, and is competing with the Basil for space. It will be interesting to see how many sweet potatoes are under the dirt when we dig it up.

Karen, Hi...

May I ask how deep the earth is on your self-contained boxes? And does the wood go fully to that depth in order to keep the roots truly self-contained?

I ask because my own "garden" is primarily on the roof of my urban apartment building.

The wood used to make the beds is twelve inches wide and there is no bottom restriction. Each corner of the bed has a post that is twelve inches into the soil, and about twelve inches above. The four sides are bolted into those corner posts. We added good top soil when we built them and amend it every year. This year we used a product called Pay Dirt and bought another from E.B, Stone which is an organic fertilizer for tomatoes and veggies.

What type of bottom do you need on a rooftop garden that prevents water from seeping into the building?

Karen, Hi...

Thanks for the feedback. Much as my own. To prevent seepage, on the bottom of the soil a bed of volcanic pebbles, those allowing the water to drain slowly onto the asphalt topped roof and either to evaporate or to make its way to one of the drains, much as a light rain would do.

That's a good looking garden, Karen.

The Francophile and I have been busy with preparing our vege garden over the last month. We've been working on the soil, digging in lots of compost and rotted manure, and over the winter we grew a green-manure crop with lots of peas and lupins in it for nitrogen. Last week, the Francophile built a pine structure over the bed to form a frame for removable shade cloth. We've lost too many vegetable plants in summer when the temperature gets up around 40 C and the sun beats down, so we're trying a physical barrier this year. We put in a selection of greens, tomatoes, peas and beans last week and with any luck we might get something edible.

The plant's purple? It's beautiful. What color sweet potatoes?

I'm not sure with the purple...but last year I planted the green and the sweet potatoes were a reddish brown skin with dark gold meat.
