When will entropy ever end?

by Larry Greenly » Wed Sep 02, 2009 11:21 am

Now my garbage disposal is leaking. If I turn on the water, even without the disposal running, it leaks through the body of the unit and comes out the bottom (now into a pan). I'm presuming some kind of seal inside has gone to grinder heaven and I need another disposal. Groan. :(

When everything is cold and motionless.

Your water is running, however. 8)

Think of this as an opportunity to upgrade your system.

And check Overstock.com. I bought a great one horse Wasteking, I think it was (and if I'm wrong it is one of the other big hame brands) unit (there were 1/2 and 3/4 available too) there for half the price it would have cost me locally.

Someday, I'll even have it installed. :)

I couldn't believe my good fortune; our disposal gave up the ghost and while I was shopping around the following week our sink faucet also died. I got to clear out the whole sink cabinet and replace both in one fell swoop.

Larry,

Upgrading is one way. But if you want to do it yourself? As trouble free as possible? Simply replace with the same model. Most models come with a simple locking ring that compresses the gasket fitted in the top of the new diposal unit. That way you don’t have to get into the whole plumber’s putty & new drain rigamarole. I replaced ours in about 5 minutes.

I've installed plenty, including the leaker I have now. Good idea about the same model and not screwing with the plumber's putty. That would cut down on the time, but I don't think I can do it in five minutes. The DW drains through the disposal, so I have extra connections. I think I know where I bought this one....

Yesterday I temporarily decreased the entropy beneath my sink and replaced my garbage disposal unit. Naturally, it took longer than planned. It was a piece of cake dropping the old unit, but it took me a while to figure out why I couldn't completely unscrew the support bracket from the drain (I couldn't find the same brand of unit). It was because of a snap ring I couldn't see.

The new unit went reasonably well until I had to hook up the drain pipe. The outlet was different than my old unit, and the drain pipe supplied was a 90-degree pipe, which wouldn't work. So back to the store to buy a straight pipe with a flange and trim it to size. Then I had to install an outlet for the power cord (the old one was wired directly).

Everything works, but I'm not so sure about my body. I'm feeling a little creaky today after all those contortions under a sink.

Too tired to cook afterwards, I heated a couple of Claim Jumper pot pies (beef and chicken) in my regular oven (I don't like the microwave option). I had gotten them on sale and had never tried them before, but I thought they were great. And at 17 oz. each, mine filled me up. A tossed salad on the side, and we were in business.

I think entropy has increased in my hip joints and glutes.
