Question about spice grinding

by John F » Sat Aug 29, 2009 10:00 pm

What do you guys use for spice grinding? I see so many recipes which call for it and I usually shy away. IS a "mechanical" grinder just like the little coffee grinders where you push on the lid to make it go? If so how do you keep clean? I would think you would start to accumulate a mix of spices over time

TIA

John, it is EXACTLY one of those little coffee grinders.

I have one dedicated to spice grinding only, so never clean it. IF however I needed to go dual-purpose, the best way to clean it would be to fill it with a slice of fresh bread. The choppers would whip the bread around into a ball, sweeping up all the little seed detritus in its path.

I do the same as Jenise, dedicated coffee grinder for spices. We keep them side by side and the one with a red "S" on it, Gene knows not to touch. A slice of bread does a great job, if you want to get rid of any residue, but a good shake seems to clean it pretty well.

Whirring some dry rice through them seems to do a good job too.
