Help wanted with Seattle restaurants.

We are celebrating Janet's birthday on August 31 -- two days from now -- in Seattle, and I need a really nice restaurant to do the event justice. Italian or seafood, upscale and romantic. Thanks, Bob

Bob, I have been away for the most of two years, but have some favorites. Given it is Monday and not the weekend, I would love to go to Assaggio Ristorante on Fourth, downtown. My favorite dish there is the fusilli zafferano. It is a small place that can be noisiy during peak hours, but very Uffizi-esque in off hours.

Second choice is a little east, Cafe Juanita, ask to be near the fireplace for romantic.

Finally, French rather than Italian, but definitely upscale and romantic, try Rovers. The chef is outstanding, restaurant is an old house off of Madison. The menu is always interesting, based on fresh local ingredients.

I hope you have a lovely evening.

You're not going to drop down and visit us here in the Willamette Valley while left coasting?

Not this trip, Chef. We explored Portland and we to the Pinot Noir festival a few years ago. Hot, hot, hot!

Scared Janet off, it did.

Susan gave you great suggestions--bear in mind that any French or 'Contemporary American' restaurant here will have a great deal of seafood on its menu. The more exclusively seafood places, like Ray's Boathouse, will be much more casual (if not touristy). I looked into Crush on your behalf also, speaking of Contempory American menus, but it's not open Mondays. Happy birthday to Janet.

+1 on both Cafe Juanita and Rovers both really good choices. Dahila Lounge would also be another good choice in downtown.

Gail and I had breakfast at Lola (a sister restaurant of Dahlia Lounge, I believe, and practically across the street from it) last Monday. Most expensive breakfast of my life, at $45 for the both of us, before the tip. It was good, but such places are not a regular part of my dining experience, as my bank account would revolt.

I know this is a late post since today's the day - but when I think about Seattle restaurants, Bob, I always think of Wild Ginger.

Bob,
Sorry I didn't see this sooner. For seafood and upscale, any of the Schwarz Brothersrestaurants will do you fine. I particularly like Chandler's Crabhousedown on Lake Union (not far from downtown). It sits right on the water. Many yachts drive directly up as there is moorage right outside. I'm not a huge Italian food fan, but I've had a very good meal at Il Bistro, which is touted as one of Seattle's best Italian restaurants. Good luck and happy birthday to Janet.

Bob, I've been in Seattle once in my lifetime, and that was passing through, didn't dine. I just wanted to chime in with a Happy Birthday to Janet, it couldn't happen to a better woman, and it is the last time she can be 39!

Not an expert on restaurants in Seattle but do want to wish a happy birthday to Janet. Hopefully we can get together for dinner again one of these days. :D

Many thanks everyone for the excellent suggestions for restaurants in Seattle and for the good wishes for Janet's birthday. We enjoyed Seattle very much -- it reminded me of New York City fifteen years ago with the dirty streets, lots of pan handlers and a wide variety of foods and other interesting sites and activities.

Best, Bob
