Jenise! Jenise! Chuck Eye Steaks

by Carrie L. » Fri Aug 28, 2009 9:46 am

Well, yesterday I needed a lightbulb for my vanity and also needed fixins for dinner since we were out of all protein sources, other than peanut butter and frozen roasts.

To kill two birds with one stone, went to Food Lion which is the closest store to me other than Fresh Market--which I doubted would have previously mentioned light bulb. We also needed Diet Coke for Len and I didn't feel like paying $2 a bottle.

So, I was perusing the meat, looking for something that would be good to grill. I'd had a busy day and wasn't up for anything too involved. There was a package of T-bone veal chops that looked pretty good, albeit a little thin. I looked around for something to grill along side of them to make it a "mixed grill" night. Well, lo- and behold I saw a package of two steaks that looked extremely familiar. The looked just like a photo in one of your threads about chuck eye steaks. Unfortunately, there was a big orange sticker saying "price reduced" or something like that covering the descriptionof the actual contents of the package! I carefully peeled it back, so as not to rip the tag underneath and there was the proof! They were your beloved chuck eye steaks. (They looked completely different than those mock tenders I had mistakenly bought earlier this year.)

I seasoned them (and the veal chops) with some Montreal seasoning and onto a flaming hot grill they went. Oh, I can see why you love these things. They reminded me very much of that chewy but oh so good outside edge of the ribeye we talk about. Len really liked them too, but I could not get him to admit that he liked them as well as a "real" steak, like his favorite NY Strip. I will definitely be keeping an eye out for these!!! Loved the flavor and texture (and these were from Food Lion!)

KEWL!

But if Len is fixed on the NY strip, then I can understand his not liking these as much in the same way I wouldn't be so happy with a NY strip substitution for my beloved rib eye. How does he feel about rib eyes? If he likes them, I wonder if he'd be able to tell the difference if you subbed a chuck eye for a rib eye? They look different, but they're very similar in taste and mouthfeel.

He's not the ribeye fan that I am. When given the choice he almost always goes for the NY. I like them okay, but something about a chewy, juicy ribeye makes my mouth happier than a NY Strip makes it. Most NYs to me have sort of a dry, crumble in the mouth feel.
Every once in awhile Len will order one of those big thick bone-in cowboy ribeyes, but I know he feels like he's being really bad when he orders them. (He is under the impression that a NY Strip (which I guess is part of the sirloin?) is a much healthier meat choice. I think he is right.)

P.S. I prefer the chuck eye over the ribeye now. (At least based on this one lonesome experience.) To me, the whole thing has the texture of the flanken vs. just the outside edge of the ribeye.
