Julia's finally #1!!

by Jenise » Tue Aug 25, 2009 6:34 pm

On the New York Times Bestseller List, that is. Too bad she didn't live to see it. Here's an article in the NYT about it:

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/24/business/24julia.html?_r=1&partner=rss&emc=rss

Btw, the copy I salvaged from my MIL's belongings ten years ago has the '61 copywright, but it the "Book Club Edition". Does anyone have any idea what the difference, if any, is between the regular publication and the book club edition? Not including the index, mine's 684 pages if anyone has another edition to compare it to.

Mine has 684 pages, copyright, 1961, published by alfred A Knoff, Inc....mine is the tenth printing, august 1965. I doubt the book club edition is any different. I was in a book club and the books we read were purchased at a book store...no difference that I was every told.

I found this info:

Identifying Book Club Editions
There are several ways to identify book club editions (BCE). Different book clubs use different criteria for identifying their books. As a rule of thumb:
Book club editions will not be priced. (However, some University presses & small presses do not price their books either, so lack of a price will not always be a sure way to identify a BCE.)

Book club editions are often a little smaller than a regular hardcover book, and may feel lighter. The paper may not be the same quality as on the trade edition.

There may be a blindstamp impressed into the back cover of a hardcover book. Turn the book over, and look near the bottom of the back cover, near the spine. There may be a small shape impressed into the cover. This is a blindstamp and always indicates a book club edition.

Look at the flaps of the dustjacket. There may be a notation "Book Club Edition," or something similar.

Check the copyright page. Occasionally the name of the book club will be found here.

Paperback book club books are often (but not always) a little larger than the trade paperbacks. They will not be priced.

If in doubt, do a web search for a bibliography of the author in question. If you still can't find the answer, the folks at rec.collecting.books newsgroup may be able to help you out.
Some book club editions are sought by collectors; most are not. But there are easy ways to research your book's possible value.

While visiting my sister in Maine earlier this month, I went to a Saturday flea market held in a church parking lot. First I bought a nice wooden chess board for $20. The night before, my sister broke a wine glass and I noticed some folks selling 3 wine glasses that looked very similar to the one she broke, so I went to their booth to check them out and noticed they were selling two of Julia's books for $8.00 each: "Mastering the Art of French Cooking", (c) 1961 - 13th printing - 1966 and "Mastering the Art of French Cooking, Volume 2", (c) 1970 - 1st Edition. I bought both books and all 3 wine glasses for #15. Neither are book club editions. 8)

I have to admit, it was my first thought as well, even after I opened the thread. Some things just take me a while. :?

I'm sure if she'd post a recipe or two, I would have been. :)

Jenise, I bought my MtAoFC in 2002 or 2003 when I was reading the Julie/Julia blog. It, too, has 684 pages (I bought it at an indie bookstore in Louisville called Carmichael's. They didn't have it in stock but had to order it for me!)...It's actually "Fortieth Anniversary Edition, Published October 16, 2001, Second Printing, 2002.

Reading the printing page, the first edition was reprinted 19 times. Then there was a 21st reprint from New Plates in Oct. 1971, and that was reprinted 12 times. Then there is a 34th printing (revised) in Sept. 1983... and THEN the 40th anniv. edition.

Wow. That is some staying power.

Bev and I saw the movie in Bangor, ME last Friday where we were spending the night on the way to Grand Manan, NB. I thought it was pretty good for a chick flick. We have the book club edition; and it has worked fine for us, and held up well grease (butter) stains and all.

David, I saw the movie this afternoon. I thought it was great, loved the scene where she puts 3 lobsters in the pan and the lid pops off. They all seemed to be having fun!
Did you recognise any of the wines being served? I thought I saw a Villa Antinori.

Yeah, I had a feeling it was going to be a "chick flick". I know Julia wasn't a "chick" and am not really sure how she would feel about this.

No, but I noticed it was a Bordeaux shaped bottle of wine that was going into Julie's Beef Bourgogne (forgive me if someone already mentioned it in this thread). Now I know that many decent red wines would do about as well as pinot noir, but a lot of wrong wines (a really purple young Shiraz, say) could come in that shape bottle too and it took something away from the regard I had for her project that she didn't strive for more authenticity than that. Or was this just bad set decoration?

Jenise - I am sure that was a filming/set issue.

And as for calling Laura "the wife", it's better than calling her any manner of other things.

My wife and I saw the movie tonight for the first time. Absolutely thoroughly enjoyed it! And I'll be one more of the many who have helped produce the sale surge for Julia's book.

I saw it a couple of weeks ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. I was curious to see the tricks employed to make Meryl look taller. That night I pulled out the first edition copy of her cookbook that I bought a number of years ago for $1.50. It's certainly true she enjoyed butter.
