Apple bananas

by Jenise » Sat Aug 22, 2009 3:24 pm

If you've been to Hawaii and you DIDN'T have an apple banana, then you did it all wrong and should go back.

That is, unless you hate bananas. And if you hate bananas, you might not hate them if all your bananas had been apple bananas.

I scarfed down two a day while there last week, and some days I ate a third. If it hadn't occurred to me on only the day we left, I'd have frozen some and probably eaten more--nature's own perfect sorbet, they'd have been. That might have led to dipping them in chocolate, too, then rolling them in chopped macadamias. A slippery slope to be sure, but as slippery slopes go, a fairly gentle one without too big a thud when you hit bottom.

I'm in withdrawal.

Never heard of them, and I spent a week in Hawaii a few years back.

Did you shop and feed yourself or did you rely on restaurants? They're not in every single store there, but I bought the two big bunches we ate at Costco.

I have never heard of this and was wondering if it was closer to apples or bananas (although given the fact that they grow in Hawaii I should have known they would be closer to bananas).

I just googled them and looks very interesting. Although fruit in Hawaii is an entirely different story from mainland stuff and bananas in particular should be much more flavorful in general.

Hmm...I'll have to give them another try. Last time I tried them I just wasn't that floored with 'em.

Well since I was on the company dime and had a conference schedule to keep I ate in restaurants. The only stores I visited wanted to sell me cheap ukuleles and and expensive Magnum PI shirts. :D

They're bananas, in looks shorter and fatter than a standard banana, but heavier. They are denser, but both creamier and finer grained. A pleasure to eat. In flavor, no less sweet when fully ripe but they're tangier and more complex. In wine terms, the difference between the two varieties is like Loire Sauv Blanc vs. California. Less fat, more acid, more interest.
