I guess a fundamental question that you need to answer is this: The "typical" person who arrives at my web site.....was that a random event or was it planned. Different users, different needs. When I head to a restaurant web site, it is usually planned. I am looking for specific information. Don't feed me marketing hype,I'm not fond of the taste.
I want a restaurant web site to have the current menu online with prices. I understand if daily specials are not shown but their presence would be a plus. I want to see an up-to-date wine list with prices so that I can judge if the owners are trying to rape me with their markups. And if the prices are not listed on the web, I automatically assume they are gougers....and will not dine there.
Glitzy photos and marketing B.S. are useless to me. Don't get me wrong, the site should look nice.....freshly washed and cleaned, yes, but lipstick and mascara aren't needed. Give me the name of the dish and a brief, accurate description. And whatever menu is posted, it better be legible....I have seen some where they just scanned the hard copy and uploaded without bothering to check if it could be read in a different medium. Details that are discernible in a dining room can get lost when scanned, uploaded, and viewed over the 'net.
Pages and menus should load FAST. Don't slow it down with background music, or useless videos or slide shows. I'll get frustrated and leave, never to be seen in your establishment.
AND KEEP THE DAMN THING CURRENT!!!! If you can't, or won't do that, just put an ad in the phone book. It's cheaper. You won't attract as many customers, maybe....but you also won't drive any away either. You will really tick me off it is obvious that you haven't been maintaining the site. And if I visit your restaurant and find out that a bunch of the items listed in the online menu were removed from the real menu months ago, I will never return.
Cheers!
Mike
