Lengthy article by Michael Pollan in the NY Times. A good read!

What a great article. I found in it nothing with which I disagreed.

I cook six days per week and have for about 39 years. I've taught thousands how to cook. I'm not fat and haven't been overweight since my college days. (I tended bar in a joint where I got free beer and pizza).

Oh, and I rarely watch cooking shows on television. I did watch Julia Child religiously.

I've been watching the growth of our Farmer's Markets around town, not only the amount of people coming each week but to the amount of markets we now have. This year, I saw a tremendous growth, among the younger set, as well. Thankfully, I grew up in a family which cooked. My grandparents came here from Portugal. Not only did they grow a huge garden, raise chickens, goats, and rabbits, but we had eggs, fig trees and an abundance of fish because we lived on the coast. We go out once a month, with friends for breakfast, rarely out for lunch or dinner. Do I wish we did more of it? Yes, I do, because I really do get tired putting meals together. It is just easier to do it at home. I have gone from totally fancy cooking to simple cooking and am now working on using less pots and pans. This time of year it is so easy, with the abundance of fresh foods.

I found this article in the Times' archives after my Mom had mentioned it to me. It was a fabulous article. I have to say that I agree with Chef 100%. I don't watch cooking shows, either. I find it much more satisfying to either talk with other chefs/foodies or just look through some good cookbooks.

I like to talk to foodies, read cookbooks and watch cooking shows. Nothing wrong with that.
