Highly Recommended: Cheeses from Artisanal

by David M. Bueker » Tue Jul 21, 2009 6:51 pm

Last Christmas my mom gave my wife a gift certificate for the cheese shop at Artisanal in NYC. Well you can't use it in the physical shop, so we ordered some cheeses on line. Yes they are expensive, but wow are they good. We're into our second order (now spending our own money), and I love the stuff. Today I am having some Cantalet, Hoch Ybrig & Smokey Oregon Blue. They are all outstanding. We've also had some Prattigauer, Zbrinz and a couple of other cheeses. Some were more to our taste (love the Prattigauer), some less (Laura is not a fan of the Catalet), but the quality of the cheese is stunning.

They ship next day in these neat insulation packages with gel ice packs, and even on a (rare) hot day in New England the cheeses were cool when we got the box.

Kudos to Aritsanal!

I assume this is http://www.artisanalcheese.com?

I think I've reached an outpost of culinary heaven. It looks like they have REAL Epoisses.

In your opinion.

And yes Paul - it is the web site you mention.

I love Artisanal, despite expense.
The restaurant is good but not great (and quite loud).
Ummmmm, Hoch Ybrig.

Thanks for the tip. I will have to place an online order. I came back with a tin of Cougar Gold (cheddar cheese made at Washington State University Creamery) on a visit to Pacific Northwest and have considered ordering more online when the weather cools. However, you have now broadened my cheese horizons. I have also picked up some nice cheeses at a wine store in Greensboro, NC but that is too far away for any frequency.

JC,

Probably still too far afield, but there's a pretty nice shop in Wilson, NC.

Mary and I had lunch in the restaurant with Steve and Deborah De Long a couple of years ago. Really great place. (And from there we went on to great orchestra seats at the final rehearsal production of Spamalot at the Shubert Theatre. What a day that was! :) )
