Damn you Yellow Zucchini, damn you!

by Jenise » Mon Jul 13, 2009 1:46 pm

Also called, "yellow straight neck squash", I--an ardent fan of yellow crook neck and patty pan squashes--have avoided buying this summer squash in stores because the few times I did, I found it even more tasteless than green zucchini and tougher skinned to boot. But this summer I found some really healthy starts (and there weren't any other squashes I'd have preferred available) so I planted them two per pot in these three pots I had that were not doing anything else, hoping that rushed fresh from the plant to the grill they'd be magically sweet the way zucchini can be from the garden vs. store-bought.

They aren't. And they're still tough skinned.

Fie on you yellow imposters, you shall not grace my garden again!

Jenise, did you know that when you have more zukes than you want, that you bag them up and find the nearest car with an unlocked door!

Like tomatoes and purple onions...groceries are purchasing strains of produce that “travel/ship” well compared to strains that taste good. I cannot remember the last time I’ve been able to buy medium sized, sweet purple onions with thin layers like I used to get in the 80’s and early 90’s.

You're sure right about the intentions of agri-business--which is one of the best reasons for buying local produce. Even if you don't care about organic growing or anything else, the variety of things grown just because they're good and picked/sold at optimum freshness justifies the additional expense, if indeed there is that. But I know what you mean about the onions--since I've lived in Washington I got my hands on a bag of purple onions that were smaller/rounder/bluer/darker than the usual red onion--a visible difference--and with very thin layers. They were incredibly sweet, and I've been on the lookout for them ever since. Haven't run into them so far this summer, but hopefully I'll get lucky again and perhaps you will too.
