A sad, sad day in my life

by Dave R » Wed Jul 08, 2009 3:52 pm

Oh, I wish I were an Oscar Mayer wiener
That is what I truly want to be
'Cause if I were an Oscar Mayer wiener
Everyone would be in love with me.

My bologna has a first name, it's O-S-C-A-R
My bologna has a second name, it's M-A-Y-E-R
Oh, I love to eat it every day, and if you ask me why, I'll say,
"'Cause Oscar Mayer has a way with B-O-L-O-G-N-A."

Oscar Mayer dead at age 95.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

Really?? I didn't know there was an actual "Oscar Mayer".

Definitely a sad day in the world of wieners and bologna!

I didn't know there was a real Oscar Mayer either.

Speaking of Oscar Mayer, however, I must relate that my hubby has the most annoying habit of humming the tune. And friends have noticed, and one night we got into a big discussion about it including asking whether or not we'd ever seen the Wienermobile, which I had when I was very very young. No one else had, but bob voiced that he'd still like to. The very next day Bob and I went to Seattle, and about halfway between here and there, all of which is absolute Nowhereville, I had a need to visit a little girls room so we bailed off the freeway at the next offramp that indicated services. Well, this being Nowhereville, we actually had to drive several desperate miles to find said services, which turned out to be a grocery store. And what was parked in front of the grocer? The Wienermobile! It was like we'd conjured it up out of nowhere. They have three that roam the country doing these promotions. Never in a million years expected to just trip over one, though. Especially in a remote location like that.

Perhaps Bob can make this the last day, Jenise, in honor of Mr. Mayer.

"He was the third Oscar Mayer in the family that founded Oscar Mayer Foods, once Madison’s largest private employer. His grandfather, Oscar F. Mayer, died in 1955 and his father, Oscar G. Mayer Sr., died in 1965." from the Wisconsin State Journal.

During my first visit to the Seattle area in October '07, I passed the Wienermobile while driving down I-5. The only time I've seen it.

 I was actually behind the wheel of the OM Wienermobile once. But I was a kid and did not know any better. :) My Sister was a friend of the Stevens family and Brooks Stevens (the rather famous "artist" but seriously famous industrial designer that made the Wienermobile) invited us over to their house and took us on a tour of their on-site museum. I was just a goofy kid and did not realize it was a once-in-a-lifetime sort of opportunity to study some of the greatest industrial design of the 20th Century. No, I just asked Brooks if I could sit in the driver's seat of the Wienermobile. He probably thought to himself that he had worked his entire life designing monuments and Excalibur and some dorky kid just wants to sit in the Wienermobile.

Wow, Dave - even if your main concern at the time was to sit behind the wheel of the Wienermobile, it's still very cool that you got to meet Brooks Stevens.

Wow, and to think I've been jealous of my brother all of these years for getting to drive the milk truck on Romper Room!
Seriously Dave. That is really neat. He sounds like a great guy. I'll bet he felt honored that a dorky kid wanted to ride in his wienermobile. :)

And no, I did not ask him if I could try out the Potty Bench he designed.

Mark,

I'm not sure how you found that photo of my inadvertent accident with the Weinermobile, but I would respectfully request that you delete your post. I was a child at the time and the gas pedal stuck to the floor. I should not be blamed for a faulty accelerator pedal and my time in Juvenile Hall certainly repaid my debt to society as a result of the accident.

Thanks in advance.

And parenthetically, you can't see her in that photo, but it was Carrie in the passenger seat telling me to stomp on the gas pedal.

Not to worry; it was a 22-year-old driver who thought it was in reverse.
