Kitchen Remodel Update--Banner Week!

by Jenise » Thu Jul 02, 2009 1:45 pm

Last week we finished laying all the pale gray/gold/blue slate downstairs. I say we, as I was a key worker on my own crew, cleaning, sorting, sawing, positioning, grouting and sealing the 8 x 16's we laid brick pattern in the downstairs garage entrance/powder bath/laundry room and the 12 x 12's we placed either side of the two-way 20 foot long x 11 foot high fireplace that divides the whole of the downstairs into four distinct areas of use. After three weeks in the driveway, the washer and dryer were re-installed.

Last Friday, I rented a truck and picked up all the solid birch doors we had made for downstairs and delivered them to the finisher.

On Saturday and Sunday, Bob and I worked from dawn to dusk to rid ourselves of the accumulated dust that six months of digging/grinding/sanding old concrete, old tile mortar, new concrete, new tile, dead flies (do contractors even know how to shut doors?) and sawdust have brought us and that we've been tracking in circles since January. I've actually vacuumed many times throughout, but you'd never know it. That stuff was EVERYWHERE. And I can now personally attest to how much dust the crevices in a rock fireplace can hold--I vacuumed every one, and wiped down every rock.

On Tuesday the roofer showed up to work with Jerry's Kids (my general) on the installation of the remote blower for the Viking range hood.

Yesterday, the electricians showed up and installed seven new indoor light fixtures and four exteriors. The wood floor guy showed up to finish the wood installation--most of the floor's down, but on the project where nothing goes right the first time, EVER, we had to run out of stair nosing and apparently, of course, so did the flooring manufacturer (Kahr's of Sweden), so more had to be custom-manufactured on the east coast. Window washers came in to rid us of six months of paint splatter, dust and gunk. And perhaps most monumental of all, Jerry's Kids hung the range hood.

Today, the stove installer comes at 1:00, and Lynden Sheet Metal comes to install the ducting between the hood and the 22 foot high ceiling, as well as take measurements for the stainless steel wrapper they're going to skin it with--for about 25% the price it would cost to buy same from Viking.

I don't have a sink, and I may never have cabinets, but by god I'm going to have an appliance to stare at!

Shucks. I've been called downstairs and may not be back soon enough to finish this before it times out, so I'll go ahead with the post and amend it later with the cabinet story (grab a hanky, it's a baddie) and pictures.

Okay, I have another break, so the cabinet situation:

On June 4th we fired our cabinet maker. Ten weeks into a job that was supposed to take 4-6 weeks, he had only completed 16% of the work and then that work was not done to our satisfaction. Worse, he started shaking us down for more money in language that was a threat to stop working completely, and he has blamed us (who have instigated zero changes to the original plan/concept) for his delays. You know the type: everything's about him, he's never wrong, it's everybody else. He refuses to hand over any of the completed work or materials, and has demanded what would be 70% of the total contract price to do so. Too, he slapped a lien on us for collection of same. We've hired a lawyer.

In the meantime our original cabinet maker has had his kidney transplant and as soon as his doctors release him to work he's going to start our project.

Wow, Jenise. Have you considered propitiating the god or gods of your choice to remove this curse? Your remodeling story sounds like an outtake from the Book of Job.

My most sincere condolences,

Thanks, I appreciate that, but I most deliberately waited until I was past the point of desperately needing condolences to say anything. I've had some dark thoughts in the last few months. This has truly been the project from Hell--my general, Jerry, says in his 40 years of doing this kind of work, he's never seen anything like it. Oh, and by the way, if you remember me early early on talking about my luck with general contractors, and how the first one I chose and waited for ended up having to have his leg amputated? That's Jerry. I keep telling him, "You started it, Peggy." :)

@#$#@@#(!!@

The appliance installer just left, and the range is still in the garage. Guess what: when he unpacked it, he found that there are no feet. The little cubbies in the styrofoam packing where the feet always are is empty.

My luck hasn't changed after all.

There's still time for a few burnt offerings, Jenise.

Sorry to hear of your problems, nothing worse than trouble with contractors. We'll all try to guide good KARMA to the north.Well that's better than nothing. (I guess)

Oh Jenise. Does this mean your original guy is going to start from scratch with new materials?

Do you ever watch a show called Grand Designs? Your reno would make a great episode. The upside? They always end with shots of the gorgeous finished product. Well, all except the idiots who decided to build their own houseboat..

Well, thankfully the cabinet guy's the only one I have to complain about. Everybody else has been great: skilled, hard workers, and great to be around. We actually reached the point on Thursday where my main team and daily companions of Jerry, Bruce and Glen don't have a reason to return here until we get a few more deliveries so they'll be starting a new project this week. They've become like family--we got all choked up hugging each other goodbye. Same with the wood flooring installer who was here for the last three weeks. Much as I've been craving more free time and solitude, I have a feeling I'm going to feel a bit lost this week.

Yes it does.

Was it actually intended to be a houseboat? :)

The builders had no plan to start with, just wanted to build it as they went with whatever materials they could find. After the show, it was apparently just drifting, and the council said it was ok so long as no-one was living in it permanently (!!!).

Jenise, it's been ages since we've seen photos! Can you take some for us?

Visitors to her remodeled house should listen closely for faint echoes of "For the love of God, Montressor!"
