Golden Honeydews!

I don't know if this one's naturally occuring or if the boys in the Ag Department have been playing God again, but regardless of origin, this melon, which I just had for the first time ever, is a winner.

It's small and deep bright yellow. Basically the color of a canary melon, but its skin is smoothly pigmented skin and lacking any creases like a honeydew. In size, like I said, small--one melon cut in half would make two perfect breakfast-main-course fruit servings. In short, it looks like the love child of a canary melon and orange honeydew.

Inside, it's more the pale white color of a canary melon than traditional green honeydew, but it has one or two orange blushes. When I bought it two weeks ago at the urging of a local produce guy, it had no more ripe melon aroma than it did today and I probably wouldn't have purchased it without prompting. I'm a person who buys melons buy smelling them, and the casaba already in my cart was a great example of what melons should smell like. It sat in the fridge ignored for these two weeks mostly because I expected to be disappointed. So how shocked was I by the ginormous burst of melon aroma that escaped as soon as it was cut into, and all the juice that ran out.

This is just simply one of the best melons I've ever tasted. Juicier than any honeydew I've ever had and very sweet in a complex way right down to 1/8th of an inch of the skin. This isn't one of those where you throw away a half inch of rind. The texture's also honeydewlike, fine-grained and dense. If they're in your market and you haven't tried one yet, you're really missing something!
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov
