The economy and barbecue...

by ChefJCarey » Sat May 30, 2009 5:28 pm

Every year I buy a can of Rust-oleum high heat paint to touch up my smoker.

I still had last year's can lying around, but it was almost empty. Above the brand name in VERY large typeface is the inscription:

FREE 30% MORE!

I looked at this year's can. In VERY large typeface about the brand name is the inscription:

FREE 25% MORE!

Just like my shaving cream that used to say "25% More Free," which lost 4.25 oz and is now called "Value Size."

Dawn dish detergent used to be a more effective grease cutter because it was more concentrated than its competitors. Over time, instead of raising prices, they have simply added more water and it is about as concentrated today as their competitors were when Dawn first came out. But they still advertise themselves as more effective at cutting grease. Smarmy.

Joseph, I have to thank you for this post. My husband commented yesterday that we were going to have to get a new smoker because ours had gotten so rusty (he leaves it out all winter, no wonder), to which I shocked him by responding, "It would last longer if you'd just buy some Rustoleum High Heat paint and touch it up every year." :)

Tell him to pick up a wire brush, too.

Think I'll have a little a little Pichon Baron with my burger tonight.

Jenise, replace the rusty smoker with a Big Green Egg, not only is it a smoker, but a grill and an oven. And it doesn't rust. We do almost all of our cooking and baking in it. -RP

A BGE has come to live next door, and I'm getting Big Green Envy every time I watch Mike fire it up. I can be talked into this! But it wouldn't replace our little smoker because our little Broilmaster enables us to cram him with three or four levels worth enabling us to do two whole salmon in a single session (as we did Sunday) or smoke off 40 lbs of ribs in one day for our Fourth of July BBQ.

Actually multi layer cooking is easily done on a BGE, just need the right accessories. -RP
