Holy Jolokia!

by Larry Greenly » Sun May 10, 2009 12:00 pm

A few years ago, Dr. Paul Bosland of NMSU discovered the world's hottest chile pepper. At 1,000,000 Scoville Heat Units, it's twice as hot as the former hottest chile--the Red Savina. Now CAJohns has bottled it a sauce called Holy Jolokia.

As the site doesn't say how many Scoville units the bottled sauce is the only thing I can say about Holy Jolokia is--Holy Moley! Look forward to hearing from some guinea pig if he/she survives the experience.

According to the mfr, Holy Jolokia sauce has been tamed so the consumer can taste the pepper. At $10/bottle, I probably won't buy it. But I might get one as a free sample.

I already have the world's hottest hot sauce: The Source by Original Juan. Almost $100/oz. 7.1 million Scovilles.

So what on earth do you do or are planning to do with a substance that should be handled with a Waldo in a vacuum chamber while dressed in a Hazmat suit? I have a bottle of Dave's Insanity at a mere million or so Scoville units and haven't a clue what to do with it and LOL can't think of anybody I hate enough to spike their grub with it!

Seriously speaking, what's the point of it apart from claiming the gold medal in a pissing contest. I assume you or whomever bought it had to sign a waiver absolving the company from any responsibility for injuries.

No, I didn't have to sign a waiver, although I did once when I tried Dave's Insanity Atomic Blast at the Fiery Foods Festival. And what's the point of The Source? Surely you've heard of people collecting hot sauces. My bottle is a collectible, sitting in its display box, unopened. If I want to have some fun with superhot sauces, I haul out Dave's Insanity Sauce (over the years, I've gone through 2 or 3 bottles--usually for making pickled eggs).

BTW, I discovered The Source is no longer the world's hottest. For capsaicin lovers and collectors, take a look at the neat stuff available: http://www.chez-williams.com/Hot%20Sauce/hothome.htm
