Twitter and Food

by Jenise » Sat Apr 25, 2009 12:53 pm

So I get an email from Cellar Tracker founder Eric LeVine that he's now on Twitter, so I click on that to see what Eric might be saying. This makes Eric the second Twitter poster I've read, the first being Ashton Kutcher. Obviously, I'm a very advanced person technologically speaking. Ahem....

So I read about ten entries down and there's something about fava beans from @RichardBlais, and I'm thinking, don't I know that name from somewhere? Maybe...Top Chef? So I click. And yes, there's Richard, I'm pretty sure--the guy whose race it was to lose the year Stephanie won, who was so talented and diverse but just couldn't edit himself, and who was no-doubt-in-my-mind the reason the guy who won it this year won it, as Richard was his souschef in the final episode. But it's not a very whole shot and I'm not nearsighted so I'm really not sure until I read a couple entries down about being in studio green rooms and doing a cooking segment on the Atlanta NBC affiliate. He also mentions, in an entry that makes me laugh out loud, that he made it onto a list called the Five Celebrity Men Who Most Look Like a Lesbian. Funny, though I can't say it's accurate--I actually thought he looked like a Kewpie doll. But good for him for having fun with it.

Anyway, interesting diversion. At least for five minutes. I quickly got bored. Most people's internal thoughts just aren't that interesting and many read like what you'd say if you just HAD to put something out there every so often. I don't think I'll be opening an account any time soon.

I'm quite enjoying it. Mind you, I follow all of nine people, most of whom post here - Barb Freda, Robin, Dave Lole, John T, Bob Ross and Cynthia. There are some people who follow more than 10,000 people - can you imagine? I'd go bananas!

I never Tweet, though. I signed up to see what it was and decided it wasn't for me, although I do use Facebook regularly. I keep trying to think of a better way to tie it in to the forum.

I read an article from the NY Times on my radio show this week, about a cook and author who tweets whole recipes. Just trying to find a way to convey the tweet over the radio was a feat in itself. I finally decided to pronounce Tbsp as Tay and tsp as Tee to get the point across. Here is one of the recipes in tweetspeak. Needless to say, I just don't get it! :?
Honeyed Tagine: brwn lb/500g yam or lamb/T
oil&butter/t tumeric&ging&s+p&cinn; +c
onion&carrot9m; +c broth/3T honey/9prune.

Why don't we all just cut to the chase and slit our throats? :D

And does everyone have something interesting to say? I've I'd been a Tweeter yesterday morning, my tweets would have gone like this:

"Just got up. Bob's not up yet so can't brush teeth yet. Mouth scummy, so ate rest of a bag of prunes on my desk."

"Uh oh. Just remembered what prunes are famous for. Hope no problem, we're going out to lunch with friends today."

"Yup, it's going to be a problem."

Gee, how fascinating.

Good one, Jenise!
I just can't see the appeal of Twitter, myself.

Cynthia explained some of the ways in which it could be of some actual use, staying in touch with people in real time when you're all involved in a mutual effort (say, you're at a convention), but it's otherwise just too vicarious for me. Most people are way too boring for that--including me.
