Preventing cheese mold

by Larry Greenly » Thu Apr 16, 2009 11:49 am

I read that storing cheese with a sugar cube or two will prevent mold. I've tried it on a few pieces of cheese. So far, so good. If you try it, how about letting us know how well it works for you?

What a weird idea, Larry! Are the sugar cubes in contact with the cheese, or just nearby? If the latter, is the cheese wrapped in plastic, paper or nothing at all? Are they in the fridge or elsewhere?

Just curious,

Maybe it helps absorb moisture?

A Food Saver prevents cheese mold for months. It is so nice to have a nice supply of cheeses and know that it is not going to grow mold.

Foil is good for the bleu cheeses.

Sugar cubes are crystalline sucrose, which isn't hygroscopic, so I can't imagine that it would affect the humidity to an significant extent. Or is there a binder added to sugar cubes? Interesting thought.

It is a weird idea, and I don't know how it works. Just throw a cube or two in the same ziploc as the cheese.

And, yes, a food saver will work, except I'm talking about cheese storage that I open every day or so.

I use the Food Saver for cheeses we use regularly, as well. I cut the sacks a little larger so that I can seal them back up again. The Food Saver is kept in the laundry room on the counter, so it is very accessible. Do you also know that the Food Saver will seal up those paper packages inside of cereal boxes, cracker boxes, and also the plastic type bags that some raw dog food comes in? Handy gadget and saves me money.
