Does anyone watch these two shows?

by Lori Gurley » Sat Mar 07, 2009 9:59 pm

Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmerman, or No Reservations with Anthony Bourdain?
I really enjoy Andrew, his enthusiasm, and his respect for others that he encounters in his show.
But something about Anthony Bourdain rubs me the wrong way. Don't know what it is, other than I feel the same way about sleazy used car salesmen ROFL.

Any input from anyone?

Bizarre Foods - nope. Bourdain - of course. He's so offbeat that ya gotta love his antics.

Nah, Babe, think you missed that one. I think Bourdain is at this stage of his life the antithesis of a sleazy used car salesman.

He's sold all the used cars he'll ever have to sell.

He now has folks all over the planet kissing his ass as opposed to the other way round.

That being said, I like what he did for my business. I got nothin' against the truth - even if it goes a little over the top to make the point.

I enjoy Bourdain although he is a bit over-the-top sometimes. Not a fan of Zimmer.

I noticed that Jeff Corwin now has a "go to faraway places and eat strange things" show. How many of these do we really need? It's too bad as I really liked Corwin on his Animal Planet shows. This one just isn't all that good.

Bourdain - Yes! Zimmer - Eh! :|

I guess I'm a fan of Anthony Bourdain. I've read most of his books (including the mildly interesting novels) and I try not to miss "No Reservations" although they kind of wear out the concept on Monday nights -- there are always a couple of reruns and they show the new episode twice. The "Les Halles" cookbook is great fun if you don't mind being cussed at in every other recipe.

Can't recall that I ever saw Zimmern, although I seem to be the only person here who can spell his name. :P

Count me as another Bourdain fan, though more for his books than his programs. "No Reservations" has had its moments, and has as one of its attractions that it airs after my 4-year old has gone to bed on Monday. Some day I intend to watch his earlier program, "A Cook's Tour" because I have the sense that, given Bourdain's career trajectory, I'd like it even more than "No Reservations."

Count me as another preferring Bourdain's show over Zimmern's. I get the feeling that I would enjoy meeting and talking to Mr. Zimmern, but his show comes off as what a US male teenager thinks would gross out his parents. Too much focus on insects, not-quite-dead things and stinky food. Having lived and traveled around the world I have come across alot of food that I find bizarre - not in a gross out way - just really different and unique ways of preparing or cooking food.

I like Bourdain in spite of myself. He is a good writer and seems to have a slightly Hunter S Thompson-esq approach to life which I find weirdly appealing. I doubt he is completely comfortable in the 'TV star' role (since he always used to poke fun at the idea) but hey, it is working for him.

Bourdain's books are fun. He's kinda scary on the show.
