Umbria: looking for winery and dining suggestions.

by R Cabrera » Sun Feb 22, 2009 5:39 am

We're headed to Umbria near the end of March and will be based in Perugia. Looking for suggestions on wineries to visit- so far Arnaldo-Caprai is the only one that I know of. Also, looking for dining suggestions in Perugia or nearby towns as we do our day driving trips.

Thanks.

Hi Ramon - I run a choral and cultural program in Umbria and have performed in the region for many years since the early 80's. Paolo Bea is a cult producer, wines pricey, but well made. Very artisanal producer. One of my favorite producers is Adanti. Colpetrone also makes good Umbrian wines. If you need someone to set things up for you I highly recommend Daniela Cittadoni of Tasting Travel. She is based in Spoleto and is a fantastic person, thorough, gracious, and knowledgeable. Her website is: http://www.tastingtravel.it/index.php?s ... o&lang=eng Please tell her that Paulo Faustini gave you her name if you decide to contact her. She knows a lot of off the beaten path unique places!

Since you are staying in Perugia, you will be very close to Olmo, which is just outside the city. You should check out L'Osteria dell'Olmo: http://www.osteriaolmo.it/ - I know the owner Andrea Scotacci. Great Umbrian restaurant in a 16th century villa - very good wine list.

Good luck and have a great time!!! I'll be there in the summer for three weeks!

Paulo,

Thanks for the information.
I have already booked appointments at Paolo Bea (and Analdo Caprai), and your recommendation on Paolo Bea is setting up positive expectations. I have just googled Cantina Adanti and it looks very good and it's just outside of bevagna which we will be visiting as well. Depending on how much additional time my wife will agree to, or rather, allow for, more winery tours, I hope to add a couple of small wineries to my visits and Adanti looks to be a prime candidate.

I also googled La Osteria Olmo and I have bookmarked the site for reference. It's an all-Italian site but the photos are gorgeous.

We're a week away from going and we can't wait.

Ramon - I forgot to ask in my PM to you - How was your trip? Any little know wines that wowed you?

Thanks for asking, Jon.

The trip was great ... and much needed. Once I get organized, I'll post TNs on a few Umbrian wines that we had in the Wine Discussion board.

Cheers.
