kitchen remodel

by Bonnie in Holland » Sun Feb 08, 2009 6:51 am

I thought it would be fun to post some photos of the work on the kitchen here. Actually, the whole downstairs ended up being a construction site, but the original idea was just a new w.c. and kitchen. (Then somehow the ceilings in the hallways and the study room and a few other things just got added, and before I knew it, the whole place was getting worked on.) In any case, I started packing everything up on October 15. We moved our things out but stayed living here upstairs. The work is mostly done now and we were ready for all our stuff to come back from the movers last week, thank goodness. All is now unpacked and back in place; life is pretty much back to normal. I can cook again!! Jenise, my heart goes out to you.....though we didn't have any of that hugely unexpected stuff you're going through, I know now all about dust, mess, cleaning, then having everything a mess again, cleaning, then having everything a...you know what I mean.
So here is what the kitchen used to look like. It's from 1965, bless its heart - my in-laws put it in when they bought the house.

and now it looks like:

Everyone here thought I was nuts having so many lights, but they're on four circuits and on dimmers, so it's possible to create fun lighting effects in each of the different areas of the kitchen, but also have total intense light while busy working. The pass-through to the living room was made larger, giving more light to the living room and opening things up, and a new skylight was put in above the new seating area (where the wooden cupboard used to be). There's also a skylight in the pantry through the open door there. In the pantry there are new cupboards the same as those in the kitchen, on each side, but 7 feet tall. There's a fridge built in under the counter, but typical Dutch small, so there's a second built-in fridge in the pantry. The table in the new seating area (where the skylight and Tin Tin posters are) is made out of the old teak counter top. And the new stove...hee hee...that was kind of the raison d'etre of the whole thing (besides the kitchen being from 1965 and way passed its use-by date)....a SMEG double oven. Maintenance intensive but fabulous. (I'm still learning how not to over-cook things on the powerful burners.)
I'm a very happy camper!
cheers, Bonnie

Bonnie

that looks really cool and you should be very proud of your new kitchen. On the one hand they are really expensive - on the other how you feel about your kitchen really influences how you feel overall.

Enjoy!

I'd sacrifice several vital organs to have a stove where my worry was not burning things because of the high heat!

Congratulations, Bonnie.

With me, it'd be counter space. Congrats, too.

It's a grand kitchen, and there is no such thing as too many lights when cooking anything complicated.
We are in the process of planning a new house, and I really want to get the kitchen right. Congratulations on completing yours!

I agree that you can never have too many lights. I knew exactly where I wanted task lights, and mood lighting. My electrician asked "do you have trouble seeing?" I told him "no, however I want to see better!" I even had a range hood put in that has a three way light PLUS four large lights that double as plate warmers, a place to soften butter or major intense light. I love it. You have a lovely kitchen. Isn't is wonderful to work in a space of your own creation?

Bonnie, kostelijk!!!

Your kitchen looks amazing. I love the eclectic look of the sleek Dutch modern cabinetry with the traditional in your beautiful (mooie? I'm struggling to remember my Dutch) reused armoire. The lighting looks perfect. And what a beautiful stove--when I got my first Viking, I looked forward to that super high heat and all the searing and wok-frying I'd be able to do. But in fact, what I found the most life-changing was the power and control I had on low and medium heats. You're probably discovering that, too.

John's right--the pride you take in your kitchen transfers to the pride you take in your cooking. It WILL show.

Thanks for all your lovely comments! My favorite bit in the kitchen right now is the dishwasher....never had one before, and my goodness what it difference it makes! Just rinse the dishes off and pop them in the machine...no stacks of everything on the counter....wonderful! Saves loads of time too, since I figure that I used to spend about 6 - 8 hours a week just doing dishes. Modern conveniences are a wonderfull thing, hee hee. cheers, Bonnie

For me, a dishwasher long ago moved from being a luxury good to being an absolute necessity in any kitchen!
