Dordogne dining and touristing rec?

by Bernard Roth » Tue Jan 27, 2009 2:01 am

Gonna be a few nights in Sarlat in October in house rental. Any ideas for the region besides the obvious visit to the caves? Dining, markets, other sites?

La Centenaire (http://www.hotelducentenaire.fr/restaurant.shtml) in the town of Les Eyzies-de-Tayac was pretty much our splurge dinner when we visited the Dordogne about 3 years ago. This is a great restaurant and is worth the 35-minute drive from Sarlat. Advanced reservation is a must.

La Belle Etoile in the town of La Roque Gageac by the river was another great little family-based restaurant serving very good local and regional dishes. My duck confit dish and the foie gras trio sampler that I ordered were unforgettable. It’s about a 20 minutes -drive from Sarlat and this restaurant can get very busy with locals and visitors that I encourage advanced reservation if you plan on going.

Don’t miss out on the Saturday morning Sarlat market. This is one of the most bustling and food-heavy outdoor markets that we’ve come upon in France. We loaded up on prepared foods like fresh foie gras, cheeses, local farmer sausages and hams, breads and those delicious rotisserie chicken from this market and made our way to the caves and where we also decided to have a picnic with our goodies. BTW, wine stores are everywhere in Sarlat and there’s never a drought on the local stuff like Cahors, Pecharmant and Bergerac, in addition to outside region wines (i.e. Bords, Burgs, Rhones, ect.).

Enjoy your visit to this area where good food and good local wines are just about all over the place.
