Trough Sinks

by Jenise » Mon Dec 29, 2008 5:02 pm

One of the things I keep tripping over as I shop for new kitchen stuff are these new "trough sinks". Hopelessly skinny and many times wider, they're actually very very cool looking, and I suppose they're made to fit into a counter or onto an island where a conventional squarish sink wouldn't work. But what I don't understand, actually, is what one is really meant to do with it. To my eye, the shape lends itself to little more than rinsing toothpicks. Anyone have a clue?

Here's a picture of a Kohler that's 8" x 60", for instance, and from what I've seen the 8" is pretty typical though the 60 part is wider than normal.

Huh. That *is* a good question. I must confess that this item has never even been on my radar.

The only thing I came up with is filling with ice and planting bottles of bubbly ?? A designers flight of fancy ? The winner of the least functional kitchen item award ?

How about soaking a large fish filet or eel in something other than water?

Pretty, but how useful/practical is it? Are you going to go with stainless?

Oh I have no use for a sink like that. It's sexy, but I can't imagine what beyond that would make this sink appealing to someone. I've chosen a Franke sink, in fact just put in my order today. I'll see if I can find a picture.

Okay, here's a link to a site with a good picture, my sink is the GNX-120, about the 6th or 7th one down. I finally decided that since I have the room to have a generously large sink, why not? I'll also have a smaller, 15 wide by 18 deep prep sink on the chopping counter.

You've selected an attractive and functional sink, Jenise. Liz and I are considering new countertops and now I think I'll add a new sink to the list.

Let me put a website on your radar then. You'll find prices all over the net for the sink I chose at around $1000-1200, though I saw it for as much as $1400. The website I bought it from first quoted something in the $800's last Friday--lowest price by far and a very useful site for narrowing one's search. I didn't "join", I just put the sink I was interested in a Shopping Cart, presuming it would remember me if and when I came back. When I came back on Sunday, the price dropped to $763. On Sunday it was $711 and on Monday it was $644. When I decided a few hours later that I could not put off buying one more day and returned to the website, it had dropped again! So I paid $629--includes shipping, no sales tax. Of course, now I have to get the thing, and there are a lot of negative reports on the net about this outfit (it's called fausink.com, btw), most having to do with slow shipping and poor customer service, but there are a number of positive reports too. I think Fausink is something of a broker--like Overstock or SmartBargains.com--and they don't end up having much control over their suppliers. Anyway, people do seem to always get what they order in the end, so for this price I'll be happy if it's here by the first of February. I kind of regret not having the time to find out where the bottom was, but I'm thrilled with the price I got. I don't think anyone has a better looking line than Franke, but fausink.com reps several dozen brands and even if you don't end up buying from them, it's one of the best places I found to just look at what's available.

Wow, Jenise, it almost sounds like a reverse auction and you were the only bidder. I already e-mailed the URL to Liz at home, although today she's up at Gettysburg, PA with the three of our kids and her parents doing the tourist thing. There's even a sink that I have my eyes on, one or two pictures after yours.

You think a kitchen sink is sexy? Must be one of those Men are from Mars/Women are from Venus type of things because I have never looked at a sink and thought to myself, "Now that's sexy!"

I hope you do not have some sort of weird cold steel fetish.

Jenise, looks great. Nice division of the compartments. You won't be unhappy with Franke. Both of my kitchen sinks are Franke and I have no complaints. Bought mine at Homeclick.

I saw that sink on Divine Design. She put it into a family room that was set up for entertaining, and that's exactly what she used it for. A bunch of ice with bottles of Pellegrino standing up like little soldiers.

It's a cool looking sink, but I'm in the camp of not very practical.

We bought our Franke sink at Lowe's in 2007 - for $219. It is a top-mount (less expensive than undermount) , offset bowl design, and 9.5" deep. We'll get another when we build our next house.

Jenise, we have something that looks a little like that at Mo'Cool. We set them on tables and put ice in them and use them to keep white and rose wines cool all afternoon. I am sure there are perfectly good reasons for their existence, I just can't figure it out for a home.
