What do I do with apple butter?

by Celia » Sat Dec 20, 2008 3:15 pm

Last July, when apples were dirt cheap at the markets, Pete and I made lots of pectin stock for this Christmas' jam making mania. Rather than throw out all the apple pulp, we made jars and jars of apple butter - some of it soft and jam like, and some of it baked almost to the consistency of quince paste.

Does anyone have any recipes or ideas for using apple butter? It's now been about six months, and I still have about a dozen jars waiting to be used! Google turned up some cake and cookie ideas, and 've been putting some into my oatmeal, but I'd love any tried and tested recipes you might have to share! Thanks! :)

Try spreading some in the bottom of a tart crust, topping it with fresh apple slices and making an apple tart. Or do the same with a galette.

Spread on toast!
Chico - Hey! This Bottle is empty!
Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.

Thanks Cowboy. Robert and Howie, I'm already doing that! :) I was hoping to use the apple butter in a recipe...

Apple butter is just not an ingredient, Celia. It's a food unto itself.

It is one of those things my grandmother made gallons of every year, and it never lasted until the next apple season.
