Substitute for Glycerine

by Maria Samms » Thu Dec 18, 2008 3:16 pm

Hello all,

I am trying to make a gingerbread house for my son who is allergic to eggs. I wanted to make a royal icing, but as you all know, you need egg whites. The other recipes for it seem to not be strong enough to glue the house together...except for one recipe...which is the BBC Royal Icing recipe. They substitute glycerine for egg whites. Since I am not familiar with this ingredient, and not sure if it's available in the US, I was wondering if anyone knew of something I could use instead...maybe gelatin? I have asked my In-laws to bring some over from England when they come out in a few days, but wanted to see if I could use something else in case they couldn't get some. Any suggestions?

Another thing I have seen is to use caramelized sugar to glue the house and then use an egg-free icing to decorate.

You can get glycerine at drugstores. It's used for a number of things.

Ditto. I use it as part of a process for lifting stains before they are set. You might see it listed as vegetable glycerine.

If he/you don't plan on eating it, try Elmer's Glue-All!
