Green egg, no ham

by Jenise » Tue Dec 16, 2008 6:35 pm

Friends of mine were recently invited to brunch at a friend's home where the main course for four was made from a single emu egg. They preserved the shell intact to use as a centerpiece by drilling out a small section at one end through which they could pour out the contents. The picture did not come with commentary as to the goodness of what they were served, but the empty plates in the background suggests that it was quite edible!

That's pretty cool Jenise! Are Emu eggs really that colour?

Oh, and if they drilled a hole in the end...did little bits of shell get in the egg? Inquiring minds want to know!

I had thought it was just the four of them but I pressed for more details, and the answer's eight: Apparently it was served simply scrambled: "It was great. She blew the egg out of the shell by making small holes at each end. Didn't add any milk or liquid, it was actually quite creamy and sweeter than we thought it would be. There were eight of us for brunch and we had some left over. No one took a huge helping, being a little apprehensive!"

Where did they get the emu egg? Has someone got an emu living in their fowl house?

I haven't a clue. The brunch in question actually took place in Palm Springs last weekend--now there's a place one doesn't expect to run into exotic birds, at least not outside of strip clubs. :)

I actually did see a pet emu behind someone's home in Northern California a few weeks ago, but I think it's pretty rare!
