That is, within horsepowers? I'm looking at a one horse Waste King.

Isn't a disposal that can handle a horse a bit much?

Go with Insinkerator. We did when we remodeled, and have been very pleased at its power (3/4 hp seems to be plenty, but they make bigger) and quietness in operation.

Are you on the City sewer line or a septic tank on your property? That make a difference in your choice.

I've seen a couple of debates regarding disposals on the GardenWeb site, but I can't remember any clear favorites.

I've also seen debates regarding how tough disposals are on water treatment plants. Anyone have any info on that?

Didn't know that but it's not surprising. Now that send virtually all our kitchen waste to the community recycle-composting place, I probably only run the GD about once a week and then it's mostly to clear out any small debris that might have accumulated. A 3/4 horsepower unit would probably be more than enough--but as long as I'm buying, might as well buy the whole horse, no? Overstock has the all-brass-parts with lifetime in-home warranty Waste King for $179.

If there's not much of a price difference, then I'd go for the whole horse. I would think it would last forever with the kind of load you're likely to put on it.

Okay, I went ahead and ordered the Waste King. The company's made almost nothing but garbage disposals since 1946--good brand, good price, no need to overwork this one. Need to conserve my energy for resolving the flooring issue. :)

The last time I bought something with a lifetime warranty the company declared bankruptcy the next year.
