Roll Call....How many here cook on ceramic cookers?

by Randy P » Tue Dec 02, 2008 5:16 pm

I know that some of you have mentioned that you have ceramic cookers, just curious how many of us are here? I do most of my cooking on Big Green Eggs, but there are many more like Kamado, Primo, Grill Dome, etc. So who else cooks on ceramics? -RP

Randy, I have had a Kamado #7 for about 3 years now. Mine is a mosiac cobalt blue and looks exactly like this one. http://www.kamado.com/ If, (or should I say when) I buy my next one, It will be smaller #3, and it will be textured like this one. http://www.kamado.com/images/TEX.%20TERRA%20RED5.jpg

As has been noted in the past the tiles on the Kamado have a tendency to fall off if water finds a way of penetrating, therefore it is a good idea to keep the tiles sealed. IMO, nothing ANYWHERE cooks (or Kooks) better than a ceramic cooker. But then I am shy.

Hi Randy,

I have the same #7 Kamado Kooker as Bob. It's great and makes incredible food. It's lots of fun too and a great conversation piece at my BBQ's.

I've never seen a Kamado up close, a friend in Phoenix has a couple of them. I have two large, a small, and a mini BGE, got the first about 5 years ago and really haven't used my oven or gas grill for anything since. -RP

Jeff, they make small ones, and large ones, and sizes in between. Check out the links in my reply above, or google. You won't be disappointed.

Randy - I can't wait until I have more time to kook on my kooker. Right now, with 2 little ones, it's sometimes too much prep for a quick dinner, not to mention, the kiddos are not terribly keen on smoked foods...YET! (We're working on it though  )

I still use my gas grill about 4-5 times a week and probably use my kooker about once a month. But when I do use it, I cook several things. It's been great for family and friends who just had babies...I can send over racks of ribs and spatchcocked chickens...they think it's pretty amazing!

Maria, the only thing I have used my gas grill for is a storage locker for my Egg accessories. Have not lit it since getting my first Egg. I cook on the Egg 5-6 times per week. Recently my cardiologist has put the brakes on my meat consumption, but I'm getting creative with what I can still cook with ceramics. -RP

We've always had large Big Green Eggs. The first two we had "built in" to our outdoor cooking areas, but stopped doing that since we'd move and hated leaving them behind. Now we have one on wheels. We've moved again (haven't sold the house yet), and now need to bring it over to the new place. (We're selling the house turn-key furnished, but that baby's not included!)
Our favorite thing to make on it is Len's famous back ribs with my dry rub. We get lots of requests for those from house guests. When we lived on a golf course, I used to jokingly tell Len he could start a business selling them to golfers as they passed by our house. That never really amused him.
I bought a 14lb frozen turkey for $5 something over Thanksgiving (a Butterball knockoff), so I'd really like to try making that on the BGE. We were thinking of standing it up on a coffee can (ala beer can chicken). Anyone ever done that?

Maria,

Your Kamado is beatiful!

How cold does it get in Morristown? I live in a rather cold climate and would be hesitant to use something like your kooker outside in the winter.

Does anyone here from Canada use a Kamado in the winter?

We had the Kamado #7 for ten years up to about 2 months ago when the ceramic bit where you put the coals, broke. We would have really liked to repair it but...don't know about you guys, but trying to get a hold of anybody at Kamado is similar to picking up mercury. Unavailable and unhelpful are the two mildest or kindest words I can think of to epitomize Kamado.
And we loved the Kamado but guess it was time to move on, so now we just got the big BGE, have used it twice and so far so good.

Shel, I would be interested in what differences you find between the K and the BGE. I would think there wouldn't be much difference. BTW, the fire box in my first large cracked, I think they all do if you do high temp cooks. BGE replaced it under warranty, no questions asked. That was 3 years ago and I have yet to swap it out, new one still on a shelf in the garage.

Randy, we tried to contact them with absolutely no luck and also tried to get estimates to get it fixed or the piece fabricated locally and couldn't find anybody to take it on.
So on to the BGE and as weather permits, will give it a good workout and a comparison.

I also have a large BGE and use it year round. Did the Thanksgiving turkey on it.

Unfortunately, Shel...I have also experienced Kamados terrible customer service. It's sad too, since I think they have a great product and I love my kooker. I know that others have been able to repair their cracked fireboxes by using Rutland cement which you can get at the Hardware store. However, I am sure you will have a great experience with your BGE, I haven't heard one person complain about their BGE.

I think you've experienced more than Kamado's terrible customer service, it's more intrinsic than that. It's lousy business ethics and practices. They double charge you for shipping, and you can't get them to refund you the $400 they owe you or send the accessories you were willing to accept in lieu of cash? You've patiently waited about what, a year now? That's just, well, criminal.

Stu, a pizza stone will work very well in a ceramic cooker, and give you the benefit of a wood fired pizza cooker if you so desired. Or you could do the cooking with hardwood lump charcoal with some wood added for a taste of smoke.

David, if you go to this page http://www.kamado.com/PhotoGallery/Kamado/7/9205.jpg you can see a Kamado in winter. I do know of Canadians who cook with their Kamado year round.

Just a question - how much time does it take for one of these things to warm up? Or to put it anotehr way, can I possibly get home from work & fix dinner without eating at 8 PM?
