Got my mushroom fix the last week.

by ScottD » Tue Dec 02, 2008 2:22 pm

My folks live near St Louis. One of their good friends and his son were out riding around in the country the weekend before Thanksgiving and saw several Hen of the Woods mushrooms growing around a tree in a wood lot. They knocked on the door of the farmhouse to see if they could harvest. No one was home so they "poached" them. (Not condoning their actions, just passing along the story.) 5 mushrooms for a total of almost 150 lbs. before cleaning. A couple were bushel basket sized.

Par boiled; sauteed in butter, olive oil and garlic slivers. Simple yet amazing. They were every bit as meaty as the porterhouse Saturday night. And a killer side dish at Thanksgiving dinner.

This isn't one of ours, but you get the idea.

Neato. On a similar note, I discovered a deal on mixed, dried mushrooms at Costco: a blend of porcini, chanterelles, shiitake, et al. Eight oz. for abt $15-16 (that's about 80 oz. fresh weight). Snapped one right up.

I don't have a Costco here in Lexington, only a Sam's Club. Wish there were one of each, they could each keep the other honest.

Larry, were they in a tall plastic "thingy"? I've seen them and have always been tempted to buy them. Next time I think I will.
Meanwhile, we've been getting their fresh blueberries. Unbelievable. About 7 dollars for just over a lb. And they are plump and delicious.
Hello. My name is Carrie, and I...I....still like oaked Chardonnay. (Please don't judge.)

150 POUNDS FROM FIVE MUSHROOMS?

Holy fungus, Batman, that's a lot of shrooms. I had no idea those mushrooms (or any mushroom, for that matter) grew that large. Your entire family now has a freezer full, I take it? How long did it take to clean them?

Did they dry or freeze them? I'm envious. I've seen these growing under trees here in Washington. I really am going to take a mushroom class. I just feel like this is my calling. Might end up dead -- but what a way to go!!

Yep. And I just bought 4.4 oz of blueberries for $1 at one of the Farmer's Markets here.
