And speaking of great recipes, last night I made Jenise’s Veal Bolognese for the first time. A friend of mine joined the Big Brother/Big Sister organization and brought her Little Sister over for dinner yesterday. Quite frankly I was not sure what to make for dinner because I knew nothing about this Little Sister. I asked my friend what her Little Sister might like and she said that Kadeshia would probably love whatever was “home made”.
I searched through the old FLDG archive and found something that was warming and would appeal to anyone. Our main course was Jenise’s Veal Bolognese. It was an out of the park grand slam! It takes a while to cook but that left plenty of time for us to get to know this young lady. She was amazed that people actually take raw ingredients and cook them in harmony versus just getting fast food or nuking a frozen dinner as she said they do in her housing project apartment.
My friend and her Little Sister RAVED about Jenise’s Veal Bolognese. I concurred as well. It is really one of the best I have ever had. It is subtle and exquisite.
The Little Sister is gone now, but I suspect something rubbed off on her.

Dave, I had a Little Brother here in the desert for about five years until he moved away to Salt Lake City. Unfortunately we lost touch since his family moved so much. One of his favorite things to do was cook together. The program typically puts girls with female mentors and boys with males, but here there is a real shortage of male mentors for some reason, so they asked if I would mind mentoring a boy. The good news is that "Nate" sort of got a two-for-one since my husband spent a lot of time with us. I'll bet Nate would have liked Jenise's Bolgonese too! I miss him.

Carrie L. wrote:The only caution I would mention is that I've heard from other participants, some of the kids look to their "Bigs" to buy them things and take them to do fun things that cost money. Mine started out that way too. He always wanted to go to an amusement park or a video game place, but since the emphasis is supposed to be on the relationship and role modeling, I put the kibosh on that. I'd always ask him to bring his homework with him and we'd make sure to get that done before fun stuff like playing with the dogs or cooking or making fudge.
