I own the book but I have shamefully never made a single recipe. It has given me some good inspiration though.

Did you read the whole blog entry? The story of little Charley put a lump in my throat. A chicken leg! Reminded me of being nine years old and utterly naive but already ambitious about food, dining alone at the white-tablecloth Ben Franklin Hotel in downtown Whittier where I grew up and trying to make my allowance stretch for a salad and an order of french fries, plus a nickel for a tip.
