What food do you serve on Halloween?

by Jenise » Fri Oct 31, 2008 8:57 pm

I'm going to a potluck party where the hostess requested heavy apps "on theme". I'm taking 8-9 inch smoked sausages that I'll smear with dijon and roll with sprigs of fresh thyme in puff pastry and bake. I'm going to call them "Doppelganger Bangers--with protection!"

For party fare, it's usually mini sausages in bbq sauce (goblin's fingers) for the kids.

Tonight it's just us for supper, and so it's lentil-fennel short-rib soup.

We are at relatives tonight and she made an amazing white chili. I think that's the perfect thing for Halloween.
Jenise, I got a chuckle out of your bangers.
Hello. My name is Carrie, and I...I....still like oaked Chardonnay. (Please don't judge.)

That's a very health message you're sending the kids, Jenise. Protection is important!

We did roasted tomato dip and veggies. If we'd thought about it, we probably could have made it more appropriate for the event but were in a big rush to get it done. We did see some very nice rolled up shortbread cookies with almonds on one end that were billed as "dismembered fingers".

My son Tim manned the trick or treat duties at my house while I helped out my mother-in-law, who lives in a neighborhood where she gets lots of kids. I picked up a couple of fish fry take outs on the way and we had a nice, but often interrupted dinner.

I have to say that "Halloween food" has been completely off my radar until now. I clearly need to get out more.

I was actually pretty proud of myself for that--I'd gone to the store with no plan whatsoever and a slightly upset tummy that meant that food would have more trouble than usual selling itself to me. It wasn't until I saw these extra large smoked sausages in the butcher's meat case that banger/doppelganger/gang bang/ganger banger connection all fell into place. And they were perfect party food, too. I made six and served them on a cutting board with a knife.

I love the dismembered fingers! And I can see where a roasted tomato dip could lend itself to some playful renaming.

We had a grilled rack of lamb with some of the sweetest thin green beans I've had (picked them up at Trader Joe's yesterday) steamed with butter and fresh lemon juice. A tossed green salad with about seven types of young lettuce from our garden, and a baked spud. Nice dinner after being away all day. Nothing is typical Halloween food at our home.

I have a feeling that Jimmy will cause this to change. :)
