Suggested brands of white truffle oil?

by Doug Surplus » Sun Oct 26, 2008 10:49 am

I've read with interest the various postings about white truffle oil here and have had mashed potatoes with it (loved them). I want to get some for use in my own cooking.

So what are some good brands of this? I have a local high-end grocery here as well as Whole Foods, so I should be able to find a good one.

Trader Joe's used to carry a good brand, but I did not find it on my last visit. I found a brand called La Tourangelle in Raley's and I love it. I have Sesame, Almond, Walnut, Hazelnut and Truffle oil at the moment. Yum!

Small bottles best, degrades quickly. We gave them up and go fresh truffle or not at all. Good luck !

Doug, I've probably never bought two of the same brand in a row because I've never seen the same brand twice. The closest this product gets to having a major brand would probably be Urbani who is also a trusted importer of truffles to the restaurant trade. But will you find them on a store shelf near you? Maybe. Maybe not. :) All I can say is DO look for an Italian import that gets its flavor from an actual piece of truffle in the bottle. It will be spendy, but worth it.

If you're new to truffle oils, be warned that white truffle oil does not get most of its aroma from the white truffle. As that aroma degrades quickly (it will be gone before the oil goes rancid, a year tops) the brand may be less important than the storage conditions. I get mine from a small producer (Spenger Foods) so it doesn't sit on a shelf in the light and heat for months at a time. I also buy small containers (8 oz at max) and even then don't manage to use it all. I imagine Trader Joe's is also a good source, since everything on their shelves moves quickly, though I haven't tried their oil.

Thanks all for the tips.

Sadly, the Trader Joe's I visited Sunday didn't have any. I'll have to try AJ's and Whole Paycheck this weekend I guess.

I'll be looking first for one with a piece of truffle in the bottle per Jenise's suggestion.

May be the kind of thing you have to break down and mail-order. That's where my last bottle came from, though I don't know the source to reccomend it--this was a Xmas gift my hubby found.

I'm kinda afraid of that. And it's still in the 90's here so I'd need to wait a while longer. (My fall St Innocent shipment is still holding for that very reason).
