Worst kitchen smell?

by Carrie L. » Sun Oct 26, 2008 8:34 am

Burned cheese!

Last night I roasted some potatoes on 425, forgetting that some cheese from leftover pizza had oozed onto the bottom of the oven a few days prior. Egads that stuff smells awful.
Hello. My name is Carrie, and I...I....still like oaked Chardonnay. (Please don't judge.)

the smell of fish cooking makes me retch. Even worse is the smell of a potato that has escaped notice and quietly rotted in a cupboard.

There is really no "worst". I hate the smells of burnt toast, bacon, fish cooked in the house, cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, fried eggs, dirty pans, the odor that frying corn tortillas leaves, so many more. I am a fresh air gal and throw the windows open when I get up. I like my home odor free. That is why I have some really great candles in my kitchen and adjacent family room that zap the smells fast. I do enjoy good cooking smells and do not mind that in my house, like cookies, or my slow cooked tri-tip roast, or a good soup simmering away.

Try leaving an opened can of cat food with a poorly fitted plastic lid out on the counter for a month or so. It's not like the stuff smells too good to start with, so by the time it's ripened you have a pretty incredible stench.

Besides things that are rotten...Giblets exploded in the microwave and cutting into a hot steak and kidney pie. Tastes good, smells awful.

Yes, the candles I have over power the kitchen odor in no time. I let them burn a couple of hours and my house smells wonderful. Of course, you have to love the smell of Creme Brulee or Hazelnut Vanilla or Pineapple Rum :D

Yes David, I burn the candles at times because I do not like the BAD, or old cooking smells. There is a difference between offensive smells and good smells. These candles are called "cake candles". They are made back east, burn clean and have a very mild, pleasing scent. They make your entire home smell nice.....so does fresh air!
What I really dislike the most, is getting up in the morning and smelling dinner from last night.

Limberger cheese. It's not in my kitchen, but is always in the kitchen at the local volunteer fire hall.

When I lived in an apartment building downtown they threatened to evict me if I continued to make my own beer. Cooking the wort would stink up the whole floor. I never received a complaint from the guys, but I sure got a lot of nasty looks from the females.

No offense, Karen, but I guess "good" and "bad" smells are in the nose of the be-smeller.
Both my wife and her daughter are forever burning these kinds of candles, and they make me want to run screaming into the street. They make me actually long for the stench of a grease trap, or the pungent aroma of some bacalao sitting in the midday sun.
I have the same reaction to them as I do to flavored coffees. I'll take natural odors any day.

John,

Doesn't that strong candle smell interfere with enjoying wine in your house? I would think it would be like sitting next to someone that is wearing too much perfume at a wine tasting.
