Nuts

by ChefJCarey » Mon Oct 13, 2008 1:01 am

I really must have missed something going on somewhere.

I was eating cashews out of a fairly large can yesterday. Emblazoned across the front of the can in letters maybe, of ,say, an inch and a half tall, in boldface, was the legend: "Whole Cashews".

I was munching and idly reading the words on the back of the can (I do that) when I came across the following, in little teeny print:

"Allergy warning: Contains cashews".

In this sue happy climate they need to put even obvious warnings on products these days. You can thank the lawyers. I'm surprised there are not warnings on liquor bottles. Something really obvious like: WARNING - Consumption of this product may lead to intoxication and foolish behavior.

Anybody bought a ladder lately? There are so many warnings slapped all over it, there is no place to put your feet!

I'm surprised at you, Chef.

You know that you can't count on what the front label says. Define "whole." Define "cashew." I mean, really.

I know this string was probably written just because it seems humorous. As the mother of a four year old with a life threatening allergy to tree nuts, I can tell you the warning is there because it is the law. In 2006 the US passed legislation mandating food manufacturers clearly disclaim high allergen foods. Small children who may not be able to read "cashew" are taught at a remarkably young age to identify the words "warning," or "nuts," etc... 8)

First of all, welcome to the board!

Your explanation sounds reasonable to me. I would not expect a small child to be able to identify every type of nut and "warning nuts" would be fairly easy to recognize.

Thanks for the informative first post.
