Don't buy Pace refried beans

by Larry Greenly » Mon Sep 29, 2008 12:05 am

I bought a couple of cans of Pace refried beans recently, thinking that it's a well-known brand name and I'll give it a try. When I opened a can to make a bean burrito, I thought I had picked up the wrong can. It was mostly water and looked like bean soup. I stirred it with a knife, hoping that the water was just on top. Nope. It was the consistency of soup. Then I looked at the ingredient list: water, beans, etc. No wonder and no mo' Pace refried beans. :x

Your warning sent me looking -- I remembered something about an unpleasant surprise in a can of beans.

But it was Allen's rather than pace. It involved a rodent... One could Google the story knowing that.

I made a big batch of guacamole a week or two ago when our son and his vegetarian girlfriend were coming. I thought about what to spread on tortillas for a vegetarian if we made our own burritos or whatever so I picked up a can of frijoles refritos. There's no bad story, I am sure it had the normal "peanut butter" texture -- but Louise waved me off saying that if you read the label carefully most refried beans contain pork. Ooh! Hadn't even thought of that but it makes perfect sense I suppose...

Buy vegetarian refried beans. They're fine.

Oh ugghhh...thanks for the warning Larry! Will not be buying them!

I sometimes buy Goya Black beans for the kiddos, and have found some inconsistancies from can to can. Sometimes they are very soupy, sometimes the beans are whole, sometimes they are broken up....very strange.

I have used Rosarita for years, with never a problem. Now I buy the No Fat version. No pork either. I have used other brands over the years but always come back to Rosarita. Of course, I NEVER eat them as is. They are simply a base for the final product.
