Just for Fun

Here is a recipe I found posted on a well-known weight loss site. I cannot believe this recipe.

Turkey/Tomato Soup Casserole

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

* Potato, raw - 3 large (3" to 4-1/4" dia.)
* Carrots, raw - 2 cup, chopped
* Peas, canned - 1 can
* Yellow Sweet Corn - 1 can
* Turkey, Ground turkey, 93% lean - 16 oz
* Tomato Soup - 2 cans
* Beef broth - 2 cans
* Soup, LIPTON, RECIPE SECRETS ONION, Mix, Dry - 1 serving

Brown your turkey

Add package of dry soup mix to browned turkey and mix

Chop your potatoes in medium cubes and layer in the bottom of the casserole dish

Chop your carrots and pour over the potatoes in the casserole dish

Pour can of peas and can of corn on top

Layer the turkey on the very top

In the same dish you browned your turkey in, pour 2 cans of tomato soup and 2 cans of beef broth, mix

Pour the soup mixture into the casserole dish

Back for one hour on 350

Makes 6 servings

8 points each serving

I guess from a weight loss standpoint, the recipe has merit, as it sounds inedible.

Karen, am I being dense? Whilst the recipe doesn't look all that appetizing to me, I can't really see what's got you so appalled? Am I missing something obvious? Is it the use of tinned and packaged ingredients that you find off-putting ?

Yes, especially when fresh produce is available . If the calorie count is correct, that is a lot of calories for one serving, for one meal , on a weight loss plan. The sodium is over the top, not to mention carbs.

Yep, that I can understand. But I think for a lot of people just cooking is a big step, so this is something they might find approachable. 420 cals for a main meal isn't too bad - my breakfast cereal is more than that every morning! (And I think it has more salt...)

Like you, I try and use mainly fresh produce, but I don't really mind tinned. I think the quality of tinned veggies that we get here is really very good, and often better than off-season fresh.

I'm surprised there isn't any diet coke in that recipe.

Remember, please, that dietetic recipes are aimed at people who have fundamental, life-long problems with food. Often, these people (my other half is one) will use food to soothe themselves on a wide variety of emotional issues; they are not thinking about quality or the process.

When I see a recipe like this, I am put in mind of my mom (another such), for whom this level of complexity is already too much.
