Tonight I will serve "mother-in-law tongues" with sage butter and parmesan.........

As a gift I received from Switzerland a pasta which is called Lingue di suocera or mother-in-law tongues. Looks great, isn´t it?!

For a 'plantie' that term will always mean this :

Your pasta looks great though!

BTW, I've always thought that applying Deifenbachia sap to a mother in law's tongue would be a good trick (those houseplants contain oxalic acid and will swell and paralyse the tongue making it impossible to speak - the ideal situation for mothers-in-law!)

Tch, tch, Bill. It's Dieffenbachia aka "dumb cane." Can't say I've ever heard the M-I-L connection, though. Berton Rouechè wrote a fascinating story (in his great collection "Eleven Blue Men") about accidental, self-induced Dieffenbachia poisoning by Caribbean immigrants who mistook it for sugar cane.

A bit of care is definitelly required with the sap of the Diefenbachia. Not only will it swell the tongue but may so swell it that breathing becomes impossible and suffication may result. Also does some pretty deadly things when in contact with the eyes.

Aloe vera is a heckuva lot more friendly.

Rogov, one learns when working as a gardener to wash one's hands well after working with any plants, before touching eyes or other potentially even more tender bits.

Also cooking - a friend was caught short and had to head for the little boy's room after helping to deseed hot peppers for chili. I could hear the foul imprecations emitted from thence and rolled about laughing as any good friend would have done. Same goes (and how!) when you are grinding fibreglass....don't ask me how I know!

That's not a picture of a dieffenbachia; it's a sansevieria, also known as "mother-in-law tongue" or "snake plant." Dieffenbachias have broad leaves and contain oxalic acid crystals.

I just saw those mother-in-law tongues at our local kitchen shop and then again at Cost Plus World Market.

When preparing "mother-in-law tongues", what does one do with the rest of the mother-in-law?
